Russell Simmons’ Site Attacks Gossip Blog As “The Glenn Beck Of Black America”
Russell Simmons‘ website Global Grind, which describes itself as “the world according to hip-hop” is currently engaged in a war of words (and potentially lawsuits) with an African American gossip blog, Bossip.
In an open letter today by the Global Grind Editorial Team, the site calls Bossip: “The Glenn Beck of black America.” And that’s just the beginning.
Bossip calls itself “the premier destination for African American popular culture and entertainment” – but that’s not really how Global Grind sees it. “Bossip is the GLENN BECK of black America,” they write today. “The wolf in sheep’s clothing. The cigar in Rush Limbaugh‘s mouth. The crab at the bottom of the bucket!!!”
Well this is a far cry from The Root’s definition of Beck – which thinks he’s one of “the blackest white people we know.”
More from Global Grind:
Our generation is tired of people like you. Tired of people like Glenn Beck. Tired of people like Rush Limbaugh. Tired of people like Bill O’Reilly. Tired of people like Sarah Palin. Tired of people like Clarence Thomas. Tired of people who just want to divide us and make us seem that we are stuck in a four block radius. We have white friends. We have black friends. We have Latino friends. We have Asian friends. And we are proud of it.
So what is Global Grind so mad about? It all goes back to blood diamonds. For a little while now, Bossip has been referring to Simmons as “Blood Diamond Russ” (or BDR). Here’s a post yesterday:
Russell Simmons is using his little blog to attack Bossip and we want everyone to know BDR is a straight up SELLOUT and in the pockets of the diamond industry that got rich and continues to get rich exploiting the poor people of Africa.
Apparently Simmons and his lawyers called Bossip yesterday about this. “While on the call, BDR mentioned his life was being threatened because of Bossip and asked us ‘do you know what happened to Tupac and Biggie?,'” writes Bossip. “BDR says he has a lot of resources and his big white lawyers will be coming after Bossip.com.”
For what its worth, Global Grind promises Bossip will be “hearing again from our lawyer” – and notes their lawyer is actually black.
Maybe everyone here should listen to Russell Simmons’ brother, Rev Run, who tweets: “Who r u chasin that’s dissin u? Who are u ignorin that’s cravin ur presence? Go where ur adored not where ur ignored.”
