While there may be those who voted for him just because he’s black, there are also those that DIDN”T vote for him just  because he’s black. There are people that voted for him because they didn’t like the other option and those that voted for him because they like what he said. I’m sure he picked her in part because of her gender, but he also needed to pick a conservative.  There’s a lot of liberal posters here that try to insist Obama is a moderate Republican.  That is laughable since his very short record in the Senate showed him to be to the far left of the Democratic party.  McCain is a moderate, not a conservative.  He needed to add a conservative to the ticket in order to votes from the otherwise uninterested base.   Romney will also need to pick a conservative since he also is a moderate, though I suspect at least in the financial area he’s more conservative than McCain.   If not for Palin, McCain would have fizzled out even if he hadn’t imploded just before the election with his mishandling of the financial crisis.

IMO, Obama has shown a willingness to deal with the deficit but the GOP hasn’t been willing to agree on any compromise that might be seen as a positive for Obama because thier primary goal is not helping the citizens of this country, but scoring a poltical victory. There is plenty of corruption and cronyism in both parties that needs to be addressed. If anything Obama has shown IMO that the corruption in DC is so deep and institutionalized that it will take a longer sustained effort by the public and a few honest politicians. The public has to understand that the common enemy is corruption ratther than conservatives vs liberals. It’s okay to have an honest disagreeement and compromiose on a solution but that has to start with an honest look at real facts. Other than Ron Paul I do see any GOP candidates that strike me as any better or more honest than Obama. Gingrich, Santorum, Romney, all worse for various reasons. It’s foolsih to think we can just shift brand names from one corrupt party to the other every few years and that will solve the problem.
IMO we have to stop treating the political process like it’s some sporting event where we want our team to win and start to deal honestly with the facts.

I think most people vote AGAINST someone when they go into the voting booth. So how many people really voted FOR any president that has taken office? It’s more likely they voted against one of their running mates. I think people were not ready to see a woman in the Whitehouse so Hillary Clinton did not really have a chance at a nomination. If you look at history you will see that black men received their right to vote before women of any race. McCain should have looked at history before he chose a female running mate (though I have to say she was not a person I would have chosen regardless of sex). The first female president will have to be chosen more carefully. Women are judged very differently than men. That probably won’t change anytime soon.
The civil rights movement was sparked by the unfair treatment toward the black community by the US government and its people. This of course led to the movement and eventual civil rights. Great progress was made over time and we are still clearly working on it. We now have a male black president in office.
