Shepard Smith Is Not Pleased By Pat Robertson’s ‘Pact To The Devil’ Comment

The Internet is ablaze with commentary and outrage over Pat Robertson‘s comments today blaming yesterday’s earthquake on a “pact to the devil” made by Haitians. Fox News anchor Shepard Smith aired the viral clip, and reminded viewers why he is so popular through his admonishment of Robertson, sternly saying “they don’t need that.”

Robertson’s offending quote continued “And so the devil said, ‘OK, it’s a deal,’” Robertson said. “And they kicked the French out, the Haitians revolted and got themselves free. But ever since they have been cursed by one thing after the other, desperately poor.”

Coming out of the clip Smith concluded his show by summing up Robertson’s comment thusly:

“‘They turned to the devil.’

The people of Haiti have been used and abused by their government over the years. They have dealt with unthinkable tragedy over the years, day in and day out. And were in the middle of a crisis that the Western Hemisphere has not seen in my lifetime. And 700 miles east of Miami, hundreds and thousands of desperate human beings need our help, our support, our money and our love.

And they don’t need that.”

It is important to note that Robertson and Falwell said much the same after 9/11 – that it was divine retribution for America’s sinful ways.

I hate to break this to you, but amongst your viewers, your opinion about Haiti is not the prevailing one.

I’ve seen several comments on right leaning websites where they trash Shepard and razz his “low ratings”. He seems like a nice enough and competent guy and he’s got a great voice so I checked out some clips of him. Mystery solved!

Is this really that big a deal? Don’t we more or less expect Pat Robertson to say things like this? What Shepherd Smith said was admirable, but really just the application of rationality and decency to the words of a huckster. The vast majority of people (yes same2u, even Fox viewers), see Robertson for what he is.

@same2u – Regardless of viewer’s opinions, Shep is right about Haiti’s history. And I hate to break this to you, but I suspect you are wrong about his viewers as well. Nothing is as revealing as applying petty stupid political nonsense to a human tragedy unseen in this hemisphere. And in this case, you have revealed yourself totally.

It is people like Pat Robertson who give conservatives a bad name. As for the Haitian people, it does seem that they cannot crawl their way out of poverty. Maybe it’s too much gangi, I don’t know, but I do know that throwing money at a problem never really solves it.
