Sticks And Stones: Iran Calls Carla Bruni A Prostitute

Presumably not a great deal was lost in translation here. A government-run Iran newspaper has called France’s first lady Carla Bruni a prostitute after she signed a petition calling for the release of Sakineh Mohammadi Ashtiani. Ashtiani is accused of “cheating on her husband and then helping to kill him” and is set to be stoned to death.

Last week in an open letter Bruni wrote:

“Why shed your blood and deprive your children of their mother? Because you have lived, because you have loved, because you’re a woman, and because you’re an Iranian? Everything within me refuses to accept this”.

The Kayhan subsequently called Mrs Bruni-Sarkozy and Isabelle Adjani, who is also campaigning for Ashtina’s release, “prostitutes” in an editorial and Iranian television accused her of being “immoral.” Amazing how a state-run media can sound so similar to corners of the blogosphere.

It’s amazing how the middle-eastern culture, for the most part, treat women. What I would like to know, is where is the outrage from Europe and the US? In the 80′s, the world stood behind boycotting South Africa for Apartheid. But today, there are many countries that have apartied like conditions for women, mainly Saudi Arabia and Iran. Let’s take Saudi Arabia for example, women can’t own property, drive a car, walk alone without a male escort, and the list goes on. They are treated like dogs, yet our leaders -Bu$h and Obama, bow and hold King Saud’s hand.

Where is the outrage from the left? Harvard wouldn’t allow military recruiters to use the career center, yet the “prestigious’ school accepted a mulit-million dollar grant inorder to “promote peace and help bridge the gap between east and west.”
