Isn’t It Ironic: Stupak Campaign Steeped in Abortion Cash

stupakWith the House’s passage of a health care reform bill that includes the now-infamous Stupak Amendment, abortion has become a hot topic this week. As a result, the RNC was embarrassed to find out that it’s health insurance plan has covered elective abortions since 1991. Pro-life Democrats, then, might be interested to know that Rep. Bart Stupak (D-Mi) has received large campaign contributions for years from 2 group that make money selling insurance that covers elective abortions.

Stupak has received over $47,000 in campaign contributions from PAC’s representing  Blue Cross and Blue Shield of Michigan and the Blue Cross and Blue Shield Association, both of whom make their money from selling insurance that covers elective abortions. That $47,000 is more money than the combined total raised by Stupak’s opponents in 2002, 2004, and 2006.

Stupak’s district hasn’t been competitive in years. In the last 4 elections, he has beaten the Republican by 30-40%, and has outraised them by orders of magnitude. He could easily live without the abortion money.

I contacted Bart Stupak’s office to see if the Congressman is aware of this issue, and to find out if he intends to return the funds and pledge not to accept them in the future. His office has not yet responded.

Mediaite posted video of Rachel Maddow’s excellent explanation of the Stupak Amendment earlier today. In case you missed it, here is the full video of the House debate on the Stupak Amendment.

Okay, somebody’s got ask… what’s the media angle on this story?

  • Fidoohki

    Embaress Stupak of course.

What’s the media angle? No, Magister and Fidoohki, it’s not to embarrass Stupak, it’s to inform the public that he obviously has many dogs in this hunt and it’s all about campaign donations. Like the old saying goes “Everyone has their price” and we can see what this devoted follower of the C St. Cult is. He doesn’t need help being embarrassed, he’s more than capable of doing that on his own.

Perhaps I’m reading the story wrong… but doesn’t it seem to suggest that Stupak gets money from folks profiting off abortions, therefore “campaign donations” doesn’t make a lot of sense. Unless you’re suggesting that Stupak is purposely trying to keep abortions out of the government’s plan as to make the private insurance plan more enticing. Either way, I’m not buying it.

It sounds like to me he is voting in opposition to his donors. Unless the implication is that Blue cross wants abofrtions out of the public health care so people will run to them for that coverage. I do not know that the abortion dollar is truly that large.
