Why Was American Express’ Twitter Feed Endorsing Planned Parenthood?

Earlier this afternoon, American Express’ Twitter account issued a Tweet in support of Planned Parenthood. It seemed like an odd move, PR-wise, for a company catering to a wide range of people – people who might not necessarily agree with AmEx’s supposed stance on controversial political issues.

Here is the original Tweet, which has since been deleted:

When in doubt, mention Scarlett Johansson, we guess.

We reached out to American Express’ online / social media relations team, who told us that no one at American Express sent out the Tweet in question. The official Twitter echos this:

Did some rogue Planned Parenthood supporter hack into the company Twitter account to do a little evangelizing? We’ll let you know as soon as we find any additional insight into what happened.

Pretty blatant hack. AmEx would not be dumb enough to take sides on such a contentious issue.

I don’t know. Maybe American Express did send the tweet. People against Planned Parenthood tend to not be very bright, live in the Midwest and Southern red states, and are Evangelical anti-choice nut jobs. These kind of people don’t tend to have high paying jobs or any disposable income. They certainly don’t sound like the clientele American Express would be after. Maybe AmEx is simply trying to advertise to a better class of people who have the money and intelligence to use their products properly?

Almost everyone supports planned parenthood, good job to AmEX for being adults. The entire campaign against planned parenthood is run by fanatical ideologues who don’t understand they don’t get to control the world.

By itself, though the call to action may not be corporate, Planned Parenthood is a respected charity that receives federal and some state funds, plus they probably get United Way money in a few locales and if it were part of a planned promotional push…

But in addition to a later tweet saying they were hacked, the t.co address resolves to an iVillage post, where Johansson is talking politics about the recent action in Congress, so it may not be wise — not unheard of because I’m sure Walmart tweets about compact fluorescents and my power co-op campaigns against emmission regulations — but obviously considering their denials and the address target, Amex was hacked.

Of course that also leaves us the issue that iVillage is an NBC-owned property, but the post could be called a news report on a female-oriented blog and not a direct political statement.

Actually, it could be that Planned Parenthood is only “controversial” in the minds of those who think Barry Mau Mau was born in Kenya and has had brain surgery??

One benefit of Obama Care is that it will put Planned Parenthood out of business.

Let me be the first to call American Express a RINO.

American Express, like some Mediaite writers, assume their liberal stance on some issues is the norm. This tweet was probably some clueless New York marketing employee that didn’t realize that some people out their don’t support Planned Parenthood.

American Express Ad for Planned Parenthood: And remember if you decide to terminate that prenancy because it interferes with your ” Two For One ” 7 day, 6 night, all inclusive cruise to Alaska in the fall, don’t forget to use your Amex. card when making your reservation.

People who have a problem with Planned Parenthood don’t have credit cards, are you serious? Great move Amex.

Wow, aren’t you just the bigot Namseer. I know quite a few highly educated pro-life advocates. I myself am one – and I possess multiple degrees in history and education, and am far from a ‘nut-job’. Once again, a liberal demonstrates his ‘tolerance’…thanks for doing my work for me.
