Occupy Wall St, The NYPD And The Media: Reconsidering ‘Press Passes’ In A Digital Age

Screen-shot-2011-11-17-at-11.19.17-AM

One of the most sizzling parts of the Occupy Wall Street steak, from a media perspective, has been the conduct of police in dealing with the protests. With the number of arrests at Occupy protests now past the 4,000 mark, the arrests of journalists by the NYPD has become a major subplot. Mayor Bloomberg’s office has sought refuge behind their credentialing process, a red herring that The New York Observer‘s Elizabeth Spiers has gobbled up, nonetheless. Credentialed or not, reporters shouldn’t be rounded up under weak pretexts any more than citizens should.

Red Eye Panel On Bloomberg Riot Warning: ‘Such Low Expectations For Humanity’

Picture 1 video

New York City Mayor Mike Bloomberg is seriously concerned about the jobs crisis– so much so that yesterday the mayor predicted the possibility of Cairo- and Madrid-style riots in the streets of New York by the unemployed. Needless to say, the cast of the New York-based Red Eye didn’t seem particularly concerned, first and foremost because Cairo is a “horrible, horrible place.”

NYC Mayor Mike Bloomberg: Jobs Crisis Could Cause European-Style Riots

Picture 1

The current fiscal crisis in America has at least significantly spooked one of the nation’s most important municipal figures. During his weekly radio address, New York City Mayor Mike Bloomberg took a minute to warn those in power that the current jobs crisis could lead many disaffected to riots similar to those in Cairo and Madrid– a situation resulting from economic damage that “will go on for many, many years.”

Mike Bloomberg: Hey, Surfers? If You Surf During The Hurricane, We Won’t Jeopardize Our Lives To Save You

bloomberg_8.27.11-316x237 Video

New York City mayor Mike Bloomberg addressed New Yorkers around 9:30 a.m. ET today (in both English and Spanish) during a live conference from Coney Island. He urged New York City residents in mandatory evacuation zones to leave as soon as possible, as the MTA will completely shut down service at noon today. He also (and as a Floridian, I absolutely echo his concern here) advised everyone to prepare for the possibility that power may go out during and for some time after the hurricane. (Some suggestions for how to deal: Make sure you have non-perishable food items; plenty of water for drinking and, yes, flushing; wet naps or rubbing alcohol for hygienic purposes; a battery-operated radio and flashlight; cash, preferably stored in plastic; fully-charged cell phones).

Michael Bloomberg: Obama Is ‘Our President’ And ‘He Needs Our Support’

Mike Bloomberg Video

New York City Mayor Michael Bloomberg stopped by GMA this morning and urged critics of President Obama to stop looking to blame him for America’s economic troubles and to start focusing on the future and how to fix the problem. “We don’t have the luxury of focusing on the next election,” Bloomberg warned while confirming once again that he will definitely not be running for President as an Independent in 2012.

Mayor Mike Bloomberg Discusses $127 Million Plan To Help NYC’s Black And/Or Latino Male Youth

bloomberg_8.5.11 Video

New York City mayor Mike Bloomberg has announced a $127 million, three-year plan aimed at “reducing disparities” among young black and Latino men (and, we presume, young men who are both black and Latino and why do we keep discussing “Latino” as if it’s a race JESUS CHRIST) and the “rest of” the city’s population by, for example, creating job recruitment centers near housing projects and creating school progress reports that would specifically track Latinos and/or black students. Mayor Bloomberg will give $30 million to the plan via his foundation, with Liberal businessman and philanthropist George Soros matching that amount. The remainder of the funding will come from the city.

Mayor Bloomberg: If World Ends Tomorrow Parking Rules Suspended And Keep Your Library Books

Picture 5

New York City Mayor Michael Bloomberg had some fun with the end of the world on his weekly WOR-AM radio show Friday, assuring New Yorkers that in the event of apocalypse, Judgment Day or other end-of-the-world scenario, New York’s alternate side of the street parking rules will definitely be suspended. Just leave your car where it is. Also, any parking tickets you may have gotten? Rip ‘em up. Fuggedaboutit:

Mayor Mike Bloomberg Asks What Could Have Prevented Arizona Shooting, Talks Gun Control

51920112 Print

New York City mayor Mike Bloomberg called lawmakers on the Mayors Against Illegal Guns coalition together for a City Hall meeting to discuss the Arizona shooting that left six dead and Congresswoman Gabrielle Giffords recovering from a bullet to the head. Among the issues discussed was gun control, a topic which inspired an impassioned speech from the Mayor on what, exactly, we should be taking away from the weekend’s events.

SNL: Mayor Bloomberg Guides You Through The Blizzard

SNLMayor Video

Mayor Mike Bloomberg (or Fred Armisen – one can never be too sure) made an appearance on Saturday Night Live to guide New Yorkers (and further alienate the rest of the country) through the blizzard by advising those worried by such questions as “Where does snow come from?” and “How do I get snow off my car?” to stay home, order in, and resist the temptation to smoke or commit acts of domestic violence.

Fox News Warns That NY Snow-Cleaning Union Protest Could Be Coming To Your Town Next

Your World Snow Union video

The saga of why parts of New York remained inescapably covered in snow days after this weekend’s blizzard got a strange twist this morning when The New York Post reported City Councilman Dan Halloran’s claims that sanitation workers had admitted to him that the slow clean up was part of an intentional protest by the unions over budget cuts. On Your World today, Brian Sullivan (in for Neil Cavuto) brought on Halloran to discuss his story as well as the Wall Street Journal’s Steve Moore who warned that these kind of union pseudo-strikes could pop up all over the country in the coming year.

Sarcastic Bloomberg Regrets “Everything In The World” During Hostile Blizzard Press Conference

Bloomberg video

In case you hadn’t heard, the snow in New York is still kind of a disaster (for proof, check out any of the Twitter updates breathlessly claiming to have the DEFINITIVE picture of snow-covered Brooklyn streets or the simple fact that this post is being written from my childhood bedroom in New Jersey and not from the comfort of Mediaite Headquarters). As such, it was unsurprising that Mayor Bloomberg got a fairly icy reception during a press conference on the city’s response. Obviously a little harried, the Mayor, at one point, sarcastically responded to a question about his regrets by admitting that he did, indeed, “regret everything in the world.”

Bloomberg: “No Way, No How” On Running For President In 2012

Bloomberg MTP

This morning on Meet The Press, host David Gregory interviewed New York City mayor Michael Bloomberg. Among the many things discussed was Bloomberg’s potential presidential aspirations — but Bloomberg denied having any. When asked if he would run in 2012, Bloomberg responded with a resounding “No way, no how.”

Scarborough Shoots Down Bloomberg 2012 Rumors, Takes Shot At Howard Fineman

joe_11-16 video

In the wake of today’s report by Howard Fineman on The Huffington Post about the possibility of a Michael Bloomberg-Joe Scarborough 2012 ticket, the Morning Joe host spent a significant amount of time shooting down the rumors this morning.

But he also took some veiled shots at the author, and his MSNBC colleague, Fineman.

Rep. Lamar Smith To Rupert Murdoch: Gosh Fox News Is Great

lamar_smith video

News Corp. CEO Rupert Murdoch appeared in front of a congressional sub-committee today to support the ease of allowing skilled immigrant laborers to work in the U.S. Rep. Maxine Waters (D-CA) was particularly brusque in confronting Murdoch what she deemd as a “contradiction” between the News Corp. chief and Fox News programming. But it wasn’t all tough for Rupert; take for example Rep. Lamar Smith (R-TX) who went well out of his way to praise the work of Fox News.

Rupert Murdoch To Maxine Waters: ‘We Are Not Anti-Immigrant at Fox News’

rupert_congress video

News Corp. Chairman Rupert Murdoch got into a bit of a row today with Rep. Maxine Waters (D-CA). Murdoch was providing testimony over the need to ease immigration laws allowing skilled laborers in the U.S., but was confronted by Waters over what she thought to be unfair treatment of immigrants. Murdoch held his own, firing back “we are not anti-immigratnt at Fox News.” And that was just the beginning of what was a feisty exchange.

Mayor Bloomberg Defends Islamic Cultural Center… By Defending Glenn Beck

bloomberg_8-27 video

It was a jam-packed week of guests for The Daily Show – from Blago on Monday to Brian Williams Tuesday to New York City Mayor Michael Bloomberg last night.

Bloomberg is one of the staunchest defenders of the Islamic Cultural Center near the future site of One World Trade Center (or “Ground Zero Mosque”) and he laid out his reasoning in the context of…a defense of Glenn Beck.

Mayor Bloomberg: NYC Bomb Suspect Could Be Someone Who “Didn’t Like Health Bill”

Bloomberg video

Chief amongst the many questions that that still are left unanswered regarding the failed car bomb last Saturday night is who would do such a thing. While the Pakistan Taliban have claimed responsibility, experts remain skeptical. Some have surmised that the car’s proximity to the headquarters of Comedy Central’s parent company Viacom is a clue. But on tonight’s CBS Evening News Mayor Mike Bloomberg suggested that it may be someone who simply didn’t like the health care bill

The Aughts In Architecture & Design

the aughts

The decade got off to such a nice start, didn’t it? At the stroke of midnight, as the nines turned into zeroes, our millennial fears were allayed by magnums of champagne and an army of Silicon Alley wizards. Cities around the globe twinkled with the light of an infinity of camera flashes. It was all [...]

Winners And Losers: Election, Election, Election

It’s Friday, which means it’s time to separate the chumps from the champs in Mediaite’s Winners and Losers, our scorecard of who rocked and who flopped in the headines. This week, a special off-year election edition, featuring Doug Hoffman, Mike Bloomberg, and more:

What Happened to Bloomberg?

I’ve run a few campaigns in my day, making me officially an old-timer – but why the numbers were close was obvious. Bloomberg’s vote total dropped precipitously. And Thompson, it turns out, had a base.

Bloomberg’s Close Call Reveals News Orgs Confusion, Did Jon Stewart See It Coming?

video

It looks like maybe a lot of people were more displeased with their lack of kitchen tables than was previously let on! Perhaps the biggest shocker to come out of last night’s elections was just how tiny the margin Bloomberg’s margin of victory was!

Winners And Losers: The Week Cable News Floated Away In A Balloon Without A Boy

It’s Friday, which means it’s time to separate the chumps from the champs in Mediaite’s new “Winners and Losers” — our scorecard of who rocked and who flopped in the week’s headlines. The Plax of His Tears: E:60‘s Surprisingly Revealing Interview With Plaxico Burress

video

I was standing ankle-deep in shredded paper on lower Broadway back in February of last year, and the money float — the one with Eli Manning, Michael Strahan, and the Vince Lombardi trophy — had just driven by to much rejoicing and fist-pumping. I assumed that another marquee player couldn’t be far behind. “I can’t [...]

Reasons Why MTV Might be Leaving Times Square

If the NY Post story reporting today that MTV’s parent company Viacom may not renew its lease for the end of this year sounds familiar, its because the very same story broke just last year, before extending their current lease for one year. So while this could all be part of a hardball renegotiation, it does raise serious questions, like does anyone still want their MTV? Well Mediaite has the answers you’re looking for:

Mayor Mike Throws a Bone to Silicon Alley

Uncle Sam may have stepped up earlier this year to help Wall Street, but it looks like it’s going to be Mayor Mike giving New York’s Chattering Class a boost. Well, actually it’s more of a ‘help you help us help the city’ sort of arrangement. Bloomberg took the podium at Barry Diller’s IAC headquarters [...]
