Bill Maher’s Pro-Western Culture Speech: “It Isn’t Just Different… It’s Better”

Last night, HBO broadcast an angry, pseudo-conservative monologue about how Western culture is superior to fundamentalist Muslim “old-school desert sh*t” on their weekly political program. The commentator leading this enthusiastic celebration of American supremacy? Bill Maher.

The comic community made its support loud and clear when the creators of South Park received death threats from a fundamentalism Muslim group for its depiction of the Prophet Mohammed in a bear suit. It brought out the irreverent in most; in Maher, it brought out the patriotic:

“When South Park got threatened last week by Islamists incensed at their depiction of Mohammed, it served– or should serve– as a reminder that our culture isn’t just different than one that makes death threats to cartoonists: it’s better.”

He then proceeds to backhandedly compliment all the religions he’s ever insulted (except for Scientology, he just insults them), and explain that threats are not and should no longer be part of our culture: “civilized people don’t threaten each other; we sue each other.”

Maher makes clear that he distinguishes between modern, westernized Muslims and, say, the Taliban, but notes to incoming immigrants: “the Western world needs to make it clear: some things about our culture are not negotiable, and can’t be changed,” and among those are freedom of speech and the rights of women.

His “New Rules” monologue below:

During the year 2002 in Pakistan, it is estimated that 245 women and 137 men were killed in the name of Karo-kari in Sindh. These killings target women and men who choose to have relationships outside of their family’s tribal affiliation and/or religious community.
Messing around in a Muslim is not worth the effort.

Perhaps Maher can do a few broadcasts from Tehran as a way of proving the essential equivalency of all cultures.

  • The_Reasonable_Lib

First off, Maher almost makes me feel bad for mormons.

Second, I hope this finally proves to some conservatives out there that yes, liberals do love America, and it’s system of government.

  • Snipzor

Well except for the abortion doctor killers and clinic bombers (And Texas creationists running education), Western society (America and Canada specifically actually, because Britain is losing their shit with not one, but two racist parties that are gaining steam. Also a bit of Europe is also losing their collective shit as well) owns the rest of the world when it comes to religious power in culture.

  • NixleRep

The comment made by the Islamic website wasn’t even a death threat. People in this culture accept information given to them by the television as fact.

“The comment made by the Islamic website wasn’t even a death threat. People in this culture accept information given to them by the television as fact.”

Because when a website posts the address with a vague warning is totally not a death threat of any kind. No, they just posted the address to crazies who just want to have a “simple chat”.

Maher is one screwed up individual. He hates religion so much and says there is no God and tries to convince his no brain audience in his belief …..but what if …. one little small chance he is wrong!
I would not want to be in his shoes.

Did you even bother to listen to what he said?

    >but what if …. one little small chance he is wrong!

There are thousands of different religions in the world. You probably didn’t even pick your religion. Have fun obeying a space zombie.

Bill’s commentaries at the end of the show are almost always excellent. He really should get better guests, though. Every week it’s the same talking points from the same people he’s already had on 25 times in the past 5 years. Yayyy, let’s hear ZsaZsa mutilate the English language for the 400th time! And the only “new” people he has on are young bloggers who say exactly the same things as everyone else, and celebrities who seem too stupid to tie their own shoelaces.
It isn’t hard to find smart, articulate people who have informative things to say. Bill can find better guests than what he’s had the past 3-4 years. Does he ever have the likes of James Howard Kunstler or Dmitry Orlov on? Nooooooo!!! He’s too busy gushing over Jay Z and Sean Penn and a bunch of air-headed entertainers who don’t really seem to know anything or add anything to the discussion.

    @ PureFreedom:

Pascal’s wager again? What if the real god likes people who don’t believe in him?

  • Snipzor

    @PureFreedom

Ooh, Pascal’s Wager, it’s been a while since I’ve seen that in action. I thought people avoided using it in order not to look stupid. Neat!

    This man is a racist.
    Plain and simple.

  • Ambisinister

    @ Dawud Israel

Are you referencing a comment made earlier or are you one of these loons that tries to say Islam is somehow a race? If your replying to another post most people here use the @name in order to make it clear, if though you do in fact think because you dislike Islam your a racist then you need to go educate yourself a bit more.

  • Cecelia

As self-loathing as so many progressives are, it should not be controversial to say that western civilization is superior to Islamic theocracies.

  • Phocus

Even a broken comedian is right now and then…at least for a minute or two, before sticking his head back in the sh*tter.

What Snipzor said. The website posted information on where the South Park creators live and Comedy Central’s headquarters, and used barely veiled threats and obvious inferences; “we’re not telling you to go kill them, but people who have done what they did have turned out dead” and bringing up Theo Van Gogh. Because the death threat wasn’t direct, now the website is “calling the media out” on their “lies”. Bullsh–.

It was a death threat. Their weasel words don’t cancel this. And their current attempts to cover their own asses — and your defense of them — are reprehensible.

It seems to me that the concept held by many conservatives of American Exceptionalism” has been ridiculed and mocked by many liberals.

Aren’t Maher’s statements nothing more than a rose by any other name smells as sweet?

Dude, if you’ve ever listened to Maher speaking on the subject (or seen Religulous) and think he’s an atheist, you’ve COMPLETELY missed the point. He’s a stated agnostic, and his whole point is to preach “doubt.” He has critiqued atheism for the same reason he has critiqued all religion: it’s patently silly to claim that certainty about the existence (or lack thereof) a higher power. Actually watch or read what he has to say before making assumptions.
