Bill Maher Calls Out Rand Paul for Publishing Anthony Fauci’s Diary: ‘Rand Babe, Your Entire Brand Is Senator Right to Privacy’

Bill Maher called out Sen. Rand Paul’s (R-KY) apparent crusade against former top U.S. health official Anthony Fauci as way off-brand for the politician.

During his “New Rule” segment on HBO’s Real Time with Bill Maher, the comedian and commentator reminded his audience that Paul, 63, made a name for himself in politics as a champion of small government.

Maher noted Paul, whose father is former Texas Representative Ron Paul (L), has a “family legacy” of championing privacy:

The way Senator Ran Paul is trying to do now with Dr. Anthony Fauci, who is back in the news because Senator Paul, formerly of the ‘privacy is everything’ wing of the Republican party, got hold of Dr. Fauci’s personal diary and published all of it.

Rand babe, your entire brand is ‘Senator Right to Privacy.’

You’re the libertarian guy, the fourth amendment guy.

It’s your family legacy. Your entire political career has been about warning us about government overreach.

You printing someone’s diary is like AOC wearing a gown that says tax the poor.

Rand Paul published what have widely been called Fauci’s “diaries” last month, putting the former head of the National Institute of Allergies and Infectious Diseases in a harsh spotlight.

In the notes Fauci kept on a work computer, he reveled in flattering press coverage, discussed his relationship with Stephen and Katie Miller, and even revealed former President Barack Obama’s private thoughts about the Trump family.

Paul also subpoenaed Fauci, 85, to appear before his Senate’s Homeland Security and Government Affairs Committee on July 29 to answer questions about the doctor’s handling of the Covid-19 pandemic.

Fauci, who got a preemptive pardon from then President Joe Biden in January 2025, refused to play along, invoking his Fifth Amendment right against self-incrimination more than 100 times.

The committee later voted along party lines to hold Fauci in contempt of Congress.
