Bill Maher shut down a guest questioning President Donald Trump’s reason for striking Iran, calling the opinion “such a dumb talking point” from the left.

On Friday’s Real Time, Maher was joined on his panel by Rep. Byron Donalds (R-FL) and podcast host and MS NOW contributor Molly Jong-Fast and Maher stepped in when the Iran war was brought up.

“To me, anybody who thinks that it’s okay for the Iranians to have a nuke, that makes no geopolitical sense,” Donalds declared.

“Even the Democrats said it for years,” Maher added.

Donalds then criticized NATO allies for not doing more to help the U.S. secure the Strait of Hormuz, where roughly 20% of the world’s oil supply moves through.

Jong-Fast began pushing back on Donalds’s points about Iran and the Strait.

“My question is, the Strait was open, wasn’t the Strait open?” she asked.

“The Strait has always been the leverage point of the Iranians, yes,” Donalds said.

“But the Strait was open before Donald Trump went to war with Iran, never explaining to us why,” Jong-Fast shot back.

“He did explain it, please,” Maher said, jumping in as his audience applauded Jong-Fast.

As Donalds and Jong-Fast cross-talked, Maher shut down the whole point.

“It’s such a dumb talking point. He did explain it,” he said.

“Okay, so why?” Jong-Fast asked.

“To stop them from getting nuclear weapons. And also, they were terrible actor in the Middle East,” Maher said.

Jong-Fast argued Trump and others knew it was an “unwinnable war.”

Maher pushed back on this point too and accused Trump of simply messing up the timing of the war, saying the administration should have struck during mass protests in the country that began in December.

“We did not know that. What they did was they f*cked up the timing, Byron. They should have attacked when the people were in the streets during the uprising,” he said. “They waited until they got shot, and then they attacked three months later.”
