Charlie Gasparino To Make Fox Business Debut On Monday (Update)

Former CNBC reporter and on-air editor Charlie Gasparino will make his Fox Business Network debut Monday, February 22.

As first reported by TVNewser, Gasparino joins the two-plus-year-old business network in a “multi-year” deal.

Mediaite hears Gasparino will make occasional appearances on Fox News as well.

In the release announcing the move, FBN President Kevin Magee said:

We are tremendously excited to have Charlie join the FOX Business family. His breaking news reports during the most recent economic crisis have proved invaluable and we look forward to adding his in-depth reporting to the network.

As we wrote yesterday, this comes on the heels of some other big name hires at FBN, including Don Imus and John Stossel.

Related: Business Insider talked to people within CNBC who had some conspiracy theories about Gasparino’s exit from the network.

Update: An FBN insider said, “Last time we checked, good reporters tend to be aggressive…we actually like tenacious journalists with a personality at Fox Business.”

Update at 9pmET: Gasparino speaks to the Los Angeles Times and to the Washington Post. How’s this for a quote (from WaPo):

Gasparino denies that tensions at CNBC were a factor in his decision, saying “newsrooms are generally seething places” and he tends to “wear my heart on my sleeve.” But he did issue a warning to his former employer: “My job is to rip the lungs out of the competition for Fox Business Network.”

Update: Here’s more form the release:

While at CNBC, Gasparino served as the on-air editor was responsible for breaking some of the biggest stories affecting the financial markets during the recent recession. Before joining CNBC, he was a senior writer at Newsweek magazine where he broke major stories involving Wall Street and corporate America…
A recipient of numerous business journalism awards, Gasparino is also the author of the bestselling financial books including, “The Sellout: How Three Decades of Wall Street Greed and Government Mismanagement Destroyed the Global Financial System” and “Blood on the Street,” as well as critically acclaimed “King of the Club: Richard Grasso and the Survival of the New York Stock Exchange.” He has also served as a contributor to the Daily Beast, New York magazine, Forbes among other publications.

Fox Business reaches 50 million homes, about half as many as CNBC. In recent weeks the Fox channel has averaged between 50,000 and 80,000 viewers. CNBC drew 236,000 last month, a 24 percent drop over the previous year but still several times larger than Fox’s audience. (Washington Post)
