ESPN Pulls Hank Williams Jr. Monday Night Football Theme After His Obama-Hitler Comparison

video

ESPN announced they were dropping Hank Williams Jr. from Monday Night Football following his controversial comments this morning on Fox and Friends comparing President Obama to Adolph Hitler.

“While Hank Williams, Jr. is not an ESPN employee, we recognize that he is closely linked to our company through the open to Monday Night Football,” ESPN said in a statement. ” We are extremely disappointed with his comments, and as a result we have decided to pull the open from tonight’s telecast.”

Williams’s song “All My Rowdy Friends Are Coming Over Tonight” with the iconic line, “Are You Ready For Some Football?” has been used as the Monday Night Football theme for more than 20 years.

Watch the opener that will not be shown tonight below, courtesy of ESPN:

  • rudeboy

LMAO………ESPN doesn’t waste time in getting rid of racist right wing nutjobs like limbaugh and hank….

  • Re-Elect Obama 2012

The tea party should demand that he be reinstated !!!

  • ChrisG

Cue the ‘victimized’ teabagger outrage in 10, 9, 8,….

Followed, of course, by laughably confused opining of how this redneck loser’s 1st amendment rights are being trampled!

    LOL!

    ESPN is just like Hitler!

  • Michelle

ESPN has a history of being selectively outraged.

Chris Fowler said those who didn’t vote for Barry were racist and he still has a job.  But if you dare criticize The One, you will be fired or reprimanded.

  • Anonymous

    Oh, Hank, Hank, Hank.

  • qwerty

LOL yesss bad behaviour does have consequences

  • Anonymous

    Open wide for some soccer!

  • Michelle

The only outrage I have is they they are selective in their outrage.  It’s 100% political.  If they treated everyone the same, I wouldn’t have a problem.

  • Texan

Tommy Christopher taking credit in 3,2,1…

    He’s only off this week.

In other news, Obomber says in spite of all the murdering he’s been commiting we’re still not any better off. Needless deaths, anyone?

You lose your job in the Television/Media business if you dare express a conservative point of view.

  • Anonymous

Well, we knew craven cowardly, politically-correct ABC would run & hide from Hank. They will lose some viewers, but they won’t gain any. The wimps who were offended by Hank, Jr. don’t watch football anyway.

  • rudeboy

lol…..two wrongs dont make a right….Hank got what he deserved and so did limbaugh!

btw, why is it only hardcore biased right wing sites that claim Chris Fowler said something bad without the full quote? I just googled it

  • S R Karenova

And yet Fox News actually chose to air this garbage on their broadcast this morning. Absolutely pathetic. I’m reminded of when Glenn Beck called Obama a racist on Fox News and there was likewise no accountability no immediate dismissal or even suspension. Bottom line. If you were in love with George Bush and you are now filled with venomous hatred of Obama then Fox News provides news for you. If you don’t fit this profile yet still watch this crapp network then sorry I can’t help you.

    ESPN has integrity.

You know how to Google, good for you!!  Maybe next you’ll learn how to tie your shoes.

  • George_goebel

I could care less what Hank Williams Jr thinks of Obama about as much as a cared what Matt Damon thought of Sarah Palin.  Still, calling the President “Hitler” or “Stooge” is clearly not an image that Disney is comfortable associating themselves with, so I agree with their decision to cut the guy.

Michael Jordan said it best when asked why he never takes a stance on social issues…”Because rebulicans buy shoes too.”

  • Exgoper

Let’s see a show of hands: how many of the foxtards crying crocodile tears for Hank Williams were EQUALLY incensed when the Dixie Chicks lost bookings and endorsements because they apologized for President Bush?

This is a bit over the top as well…As Michelle and I discussed earlier..No need to start your discussion with insults..

Michelle- he deserved what he got..He was inappropriate at best…There is no excuse for calling any of our Presidents Hitler.
He is getting treated far better than the Dixie Chics who had to deal with multiple death threats, boycotts, etc.

  • Michelle

Moochelle, if you’d step away from Rev. Wrights pew for a bit, you might not be so angry all the time.  Just a thought.

damn. that was fast people.  I just wrote this AM, that he was done, but wow, this quick?  Good on ya ESPN.  My republican friends said the same thing.  He killed what little following he had.  No one like’s that kind of talk.

  • Anonymous

Good… His shtick is 20 years old and played out.  No one would know who Hank Williams Jr. was if if weren’t for his father.  You either have pure hatred for the president or no understanding of history to compare of Obama and Hitler.

You’re clearly ignoring the replies by Rudeboy below (and since they completely shatter your theory of a liberal bias at ESPN, I probably can’t blame you).  According to his quote, ESPN reprimands any anchors for taking a political stance while representing ESPN period.

Now, if you have an example of someone not being reprimanded for bad-mouthing conservatives, then you might have a case.  Otherwise, it’s looking a little flimsy.

  • The_Reasonable_Lib

Limbaugh did not make a racist statement. He stated that McNabb was overrated….which he was. He stated that McNabb was overrated because of the sports media desire to have a black QB do well. Rush never criticized McNabb other than to say he is overrated. I wonder how many times the word overrated is spoken on a sports show? Is that a code word for racism?

    see link

    http://www.aolnews.com/2010/12/21/seven-years-later-was-rush-limbaugh-right-about-donovan-mcnabb/

  • Anonymous

    How are you not?

  • Anonymous

He is even worse than that!

  • Anonymous

Surely you’re not okay with what he said on F&F

  • Anonymous

Yet you are on board with Limbaugh’s dismissal, despite the context.  The panel discussion began with the pundits speculating that Donavan McNabb was unfairly criticised for being a black quarterback. All Rush said was he felt McNabb was actually supported in the press for being a black QB.  Why were his comments regarded as racist when the previous comments, in a conversation begun by others on the panel, were not deem racist?

  • rudeboy

    lol….nice spin.

Why dont you put Limbaughs full quote and also, why didnt Limbaugh sue if he was treated unfairly?

  • Anonymous

I have been waiting for nearly 3 years for Barry to do that and I don’t think he will!

  • Tex45

Yeah that was classic the way they quickly informed Limbaugh he need not apply.

you replied too fast to read the link. It contains his quote along with Michael Irving saying he agrees with what Limbaugh said on that show. HE AGREED!!!! He is black! not only did Irving say he agreed, he said it twice.

You claim I spin. I gave you a link from aol news (left leaning) providing the quote you asked for (video too in case you can’t read). Instead of reading it, you respond in 3 seconds saying I am spinning it. Read it for yourself. That fact that you don’t shows you are a sheep led by your liberal herders at MSNBC.

Why didnt Limbaugh say that Mcnabb was overrated directly? He claimed that the media was so desperate for black coaches and players to do well. Affirmative action card

  • Exgoper

And then he’ll have to apologize to El Rushbo for that apology.

  • Texan

Just wait until nfl fans see he’s not on tonight. nfl suits will get a rude awakening. Hank will be back on next week.

  • South Park Conservatives

Who are/ what are the Dixie Chicks?

  • rudeboy

lol……….next time, Rush would think twice before claiming affirmative action where there isnt any. I watched the video again and apparently MCnabb was an effedctive player for his team for two years before the incident.

Why didnt Rush sue for unfair dismissal?

  • Anonymous

You have an inferiority complex – and it’s fully justified.

  • Anonymous

Barry, child. He’s name is still barry!

    Gulp!

  • Anonymous

Where is the racism there? He didn’t say McNabb didn’t belong as a QB. He wasn’t an elite QB, the Philly defense was more of a reason for their success. And doesn’t the media have a want for a black QB to do well? so pointing out a fact is racist?

  • Anonymous

Most people out grow fart jokes by the time their 11.

  • Anonymous

I take that as a NO!

    LMAO

  • Anonymous

So comparing Bush to Hitler is a Liberal point of view?

  • Anonymous

Would ESPN have pulled him if he referenced the Tea Party to Hitler?

    The answer is NO!!

  • George_goebel

Well then he called the Speaker of the House Hitler which is equally as bad.

However, he did refer to Obama and Biden as “The Three Stooges” (sic) and “the enemy”, so it’s probably safe to assume he meant Obama was Hitler.

  • Anonymous

Hey ProObama, I am just curious if you would have pulled the lever for Obama had he been a far right Conservative supported by the Tea Party?

  • Anonymous

Do you not remember that guy who was in the Geico commercials? He called and left some tea party group a drunken message saying something insulting about them. He got fired. It’s not a left/right thing like you want to make it out to be, companies just don’t want to risk losing a big chunk of customers over anything controversial.

I’m interested in how you came up with Obama giving more money to the banks than Bush. You do know that TARP was under Bush’s administration right.

  • George_goebel

I doubt NFL fans really care what little jingle is played before the game.  If they do, then I really would have to question how much of a fan they were to begin with.

  • RP22

Not sure I know what the quote represents..Did a ESPN analyst say that? You can always find an incident where you may be correct..Do you still think Hank should not have been fired?
If you represent this country as its Commander in Chief you deserve some modicum of respect-period!
Disagree with either party or any President-fine..Calling them Hitler–not OK in the least..

South Park Conservative..I dont see how you can say what I say about their leanings is a “total lie”..
This is the problem with the discourse in here..Your opinion is different than mine-I can come up with numerous reasons why I believe they are a conservative company..That is my opinion and yours is they are not one..OK..I dont think you are lying by thinking they are not conservative..and I believe they are one..

  • Michelle

Rush’s statement was about the media, not McNabb.  No matter how many times you libs say he was racist, it won’t make it true.

  • Anonymous

So, are you for or against what Hank said?

  • South Park Conservatives

Rush was pointing out all the media hype McNabb was getting. And how the media wanted a black QB to succeed.

Think back to all those ” black QB’s make strides” stories you read about every year in the NYTimes,USA Today, and other newspapers.

Note you never read ” hispanic QB’S make strides”, “asian QB’S make strides”, or “ bi-racial QB’S make strides”.

Actually, IN MY OPINION, one can paint Liberal hypocrisy with a broad brush…a very BIG brush at that!!

  • Anonymous

Ideologically, Hitler and Obama are on the same page. They are both proponents of “progressive” government, engaged in unprovoked war and killed citizens of their country without trial. I’m not saying Obama is Hitler but if Hitler was still alive and seen Obama and his actions, he would most likely say “That Obama guy… he’s alright.”

  • Anonymous

Who knows why.  But if you watch the video when the screen cuts to a multi-field shot Tom Jackson is nodding at Limabaugh’s comments, and then he engages Rush in a discussion about Donavan’s stat’s and results.  He never takes Rush to task for being controversial until the next week, after he was gone from the set. That;s because nobody had a problem with the comments until a few days later when activists started up the controversy.

WHY DIDNT LIMBAUGH SUE IF HE WAS WRONGLY DISMISSED?

furthermore, Rush was racist on 2 counts-

    1) Claiming that the media was supporting affirmative action in sports just because he feels that a black player was overrated

    2) Claiming that mcnabb, an effective player for his team for two years (who was also good at making plays) is overrated. Surely, a white quarterback wouldnt have recieved such criticism

Williams gave a lazy and trite opinion, but Jonah Goldberg wrote an entire book on the commonalities between the modern progressive movement and the fascist movement in Germany.  So yes, it is a conservative point of view that Obama and Biden have advanced policies that share some traits with Hitler’s movement early in the beginning.

Good call ESPN. Football is about football. Not country music or political views.

Texan, without going through a myriad of content..I just took this off of Wikipedia..Further research showed 48% given to Dems 50% to Republicans 2% others.. Disney did try to stop distribution of Fahrenheit 9/11..
I think one can make the argument on either side and make their point..
In the 2008 election cycle, Disney spent over a million dollars in

I believe that the media was trying to dispel the racist myth that blacks were not smart enough to be quarterbacks in the first place and not trying to force black qbs to succeed.

WHY DIDNT RUSH SUE FOR UNFAIR DISMISSAL? He knew that he was racist, palin and simple

Comparing a U.S. President to Hitler isn’t “criticizing” his policies. It’s disrespectful to ALL Americans. And calling an American President and VP “the enemy” is just plain unpatriotic.

  • ceeza

ahhh I got ahead of myself…… Rush wasn’t fired or dismissed though He resigned…take that for what you will.. maybe to save face maybe he knew it was coming.. Still he resigned..

Ah, you have to have tape to edit, you can’t edit live, the protester was taped.  Perhaps that protester voiced something dumb, that did not add to why the protesters were protesting, which is what FOX was actually doing the story about.

FOX has aired critical comments by people while doing man on the street interviews.

Not much else you are ranting about is making any sense, of course you aren’t aware of the candidates attacking the FOX debate panel for attempting to cause dissention among the candidates, yeah, they are promoting the Republican party. lol

It was around $260 some billion spent before Bush left office and the Obama team at that time requested the remaining funds be released and available to him on day one as he assumed office.  Bush honored their request and put it into motion with Congress and the remaining funding was indeed available for President Obama on day one.  So even if Bush spent his entire portion on banks(he did not)  it would not amount to what Obama had to work with.

In a Socialist Society, freedom of speech is the first victim.  If I was Hank, I would petition for ACLU representation.  Bottom line, whether you agree or disagree, he has just as much right to his opinion as any other citizen.  Or…of course…we can always just change the rules, which would make some folks pretty happy I think.

  • Anonymous

Not a big deal really, ESPN over reacted but in todays environment that’s not surprising and Hank certainly won’t lose any sleep over it either, that one endorsement isn’t exactly the cornerstone of his career. It sure does illustrate just how “pussified” everyone has become though.

  • Anonymous

WOW…Hank rubbed his teabag all over Obama’s face…LOL

  • The Real Royal Emperor

That is a fair and equitable consequence. Gle(n)n O’Beckerhead called our President racist on FOX & Friends (a pattern?), his advertisers were boycotted costing FOX a small fortune, and he was ultimately canned. If that is the verdict against Roseanne or others, it is capitalism at work.

  • The Real Royal Emperor

    “They?”

You’ve got the church; we’ve got the ‘lamestream’ media, right? Go complain to your pastor.

Mainstream is science and learning, the future–those ‘elitist’ things you reject.

Mainstream is creative and inherently progressive–not limited to monochromatic conceptions and mythic ideologies.

The future is a place without bigotry and prejudice. Furthermore, religion is an idea like any other, subject to reasonable and thougtful evidence-based criticism.

To dispute is to deny with evidence and reason; bigotry has no reason but prejudice.

After commenting that President Bush had digital Brown Shirts putting pressure on reporters and editors, he has been in a number of studios.

How about Bill Maher referring to Laura Bush as Hitler’s dog?  He’s still on air and invited to cable network programs.

“The real terrorist threats are George W Bush and his band of brown-shirted thugs.”  Sandra Bernhard
I don’t think her comments led to a decline in her career.

Nor did David Clennen of “The Agency” after saying:

“I’m saying that the moral climate within the ruling class in this country is not that different from the moral climate within the ruling class of Hitler’s Germany.”  He said that about the Bush administration and it had no affect on his career.

  • Glutton

What was his opinion exactly?  That Obama golfing with Boehner would be like Hitler golfing with Neyanyahu?  That was the dumbest analogy ever and even the trio from Fox & Friends seemed confused by it.

  • Glutton

Agreed, Hank Williams came off as a complete nut.  I hope he was drunk when he did that interview because he didn’t seem very intelligent or insightful at all.

  • Pablo

You’re thinking about buying Slim Jims and Mountain Dew like you’re thinking about breathing, Kook.

  • Glutton

That would have made more sense than what Hank said.

  • Glutton

Once again, conservatives have no clue what freedom of speech means.  Hank Williams’s right to free speech was not oppressed.  No one is prosecuting him or putting him in prison.  His employer decided that Hank Williams no longer represents the image they want to be known by.  It’s called a business decision.  Should the government go after ABC/ESPN and put everyone in prison for making a business decision?  I guess conservatives kooks aren’t as “pro-business” as they claim.

  • Glutton

Hank should’ve realized that he’s just an ignorant redneck that’s only known for singing, “are you ready for some football?”  No one cares about his political views, and if he’s going to tell us about his political views, don’t come off as some sort of idiot that throws incoherent Hitler analogies.

  • Glutton

    I agree.

  • Glutton

Right, because Hitler loved black people.

  • Glutton

Free market solutions.  Although we have the right to freedom of speech without fear from government prosecution, it does not give us a license to say something completely idiotic without facing the wrath of our employers.  If you decide to come up with a racist blog and associate your name with racism all over the internet, chances are that won’t help your employment prospects either.  It’s not a violation of freedom of speech.  It’s just how society clamps down on idiots.

  • Glutton

Would a backwards redneck hick ever reference the Teabaggers to Hitler?

    The answer is NO!!

  • Glutton

Right, because people watch MNF to listen to a backwards redneck hick sing, “are you ready for some football” instead of actually watching the game.  You’re clearly not even an American if you think that will bring down football ratings.

ya 2004, 2006 and 2008 the dems began to stop the conservative bleeding of america–until the supreme court allowed our democracy to be for sale to the highest bidder…

ESPN won’t lose any viewers dumbass.  Football fans will tune in to watch a football game.  The NFL will move on and not miss a beat without that drunk.  Screw Hank Williams and the horse he rode in on. Hank Williams needs the NFL a hell of a lot more than the NFL needs Hank Williams.  Hank had a good thing going and screwed it up.  Hank better get out there and make his apology tour ASAP and beg for forgiveness if he wants to be associated with the NFL and ESPN. MNF will be on next week with or without the drunk redneck, guaranteed, and the ratings will depend on the match up and the game not whether some hillbilly is in the show open.

Love your take on this then:

    http://newsbusters.org/node/3586

  • Anonymous

just because you are sue happy doesn’t mean others are.

point 1- Rush never mentioned affirmative action. McNabb did not become an NFL QB due to affirmative action. McNabb got to the NFL by playing his way there as he should. Rush’s point was, he was not an elite QB or as good as most in the sports media lifted him up to be. His stats don’t lie. He only had what would be considered 1 “great” season. His completion % was very low in QB terms. At no point in the segment with ESPN did anyone mention affirmative action.

point 2- are you really saying that white QB’s don’t get the overrated treatment? Do you watch sports? Let’s see – coldfootballfacts.com has a top 5 overrated QB’s of all time. 4 of the top 5 are white.

here is a yahoo sports link (they must hate white people) –

    http://sports.yahoo.com/nfl/news?slug=ycn-8499137

    top 5 “overrated” QB’s….all white.

I know it is hard to hear facts….it must be tough to have your beliefs shown to be wrong, but it is part of growing up!

For all the Rush Commentators, READ THIS: Rush was fired from ESPN not so much for his statement about McNabb but for his “pattern” of racist comments. ESPN sought a “date with the Devil” in their efforts to capitalize on Rush’s popularity, they (misguidedly) thought they could use his popularity to garner a broader audience without the racial stuff. They looked at his popularity, not “why” he was so popular with some. i.e. the racist crowd. Rush rarely acknowledges racism by those with a documented history of it. He only seeks to inflame those who view advances in a just racial dynamic that feel that such advances threaten them.
Don’t naively pick apart and deliberately disregard his history. If you do, you’ll miss the point.

Hank Williams died in 1953.  He was an alcoholic and addicted to pain medication – those caused great difficulties in his personal life.  Of course Hank Williams was an immense talent.

Hank Williams Jr. is obviously alive.  Try thinking a little more before trying to correct people…

  • dono

I never liked Jr. on Monday Night Football – I do not think he sings well and I never understood why they would try to appeal to red necks.  Hank Jr. always struck me as a red neck.  Turns out I was correct he is a red neck.

We live in a country where Jr. and people like him think its wrong in the extreme for the Senate Majority Leader and the President of the United States to play golf together.  Really?  Speaks volumes about the sorry state of many of our countrymen.

I am extremely pleased that I wont have to hear his performance before my football.  Guess Jr. and all his rowdy friends can sit around calling President Obama Hitler on Monday nights now.

Daydreaming again South Park?  That didnt happen in the real world so you have no way of knowing.  Classic Strawman.  Stop pretending to be such a helpless victim and realize the media is owned and operated by massive corporations not liberal hippies…

    only in certain realms, apparently.

You make one good point.  Yes, I know very well what “free speech” is and isn’t.  It is a pet peeve of mine as well that people really don’t know what “free speech” means.  I guess you couldn’t tell, I was using poetic license/shorthand to just jot down a quick response, and then go away.  But how can you respond to a single post I made by saying all conservatives (“kooks”) feel a certain way?  Now that’s hyperbole to a high degree.  My point, my own single opinion, is simply that Bennett, a long-time Hollywood liberal, gets a pass for what he said (I didn’t even read anything about it anywhere until someone brought it to my attention), and they certainly didn’t edit his performance out of “Blue Bloods,” which could easily have been done.  However, everyone in the performance/media field get their knickers in a twist over what HW Jr. said.  It’s not how offensive the speech is, it’s all about whom it’s directed to.  They’re hypocrites.  But then, that’s hardly a news flash to anyone.

Excuse me, you snotty faced heap of parrot droppings!

I never, not once referred to Mr. Williams as “Hank William’s,” Moreover, as the “Jr”. portion of Mr. William’s name has become a professional moniker.  As you pointed out, Williams Sr. is deceased, ergo Williams Jr., is now, in fact, Hank Williams Sr.

However, in your puerile angst you dug as deep a you could to find a grammatical error with which to point out.  Moreover, I wonder why you feel impelled to defend the virtue of Ms. Chase, who operates a soft porn site?

Anyway, the majority of English academics find little if any grammatical trouble with the truncation I chose: “Mr. Williams.”  So there!

Finally, I don’t believe this silly debate is about Mr. Williams, rather, is about my conclusion pertaining to Hollywood Leftists, isn’t it DONO?  LOL  Which I am quite certain you think are all really swell people… LOL

    Cogito, ergo sum  (Purveyor)

Did you “forget” about a certain country in asia that Hitler allied himself with? He would play friendly with anybody who would push his “progressive” agenda.

  • Anonymous

Did you notice that “progressive” governments put people into camps alot back then? The US, Germany, Japan, Russia. Did you know  Mahatma Gandhi hated blacks and compared them to apes? It’s true. I also find it hilarious that the only people who agree with you are your fellow progs trying desperately to forget the crimes against humainity their ideology has caused.

I wonder, since Obama killed an American citizen on the suspicion of being a terrorist and traitor without trial or any form of due process, not even trial in absentia, and alot of “progressives” like to call tea party members “terrorists” and “traitors”, how long do you think untill Obama finds the TP guilty of their crimes and takes them out? Will the “progressive” cycle of hate repeat itself? The hate from the left is most certainly there. They flaunt that hate everyday. I think it’s only a matter of time untill the progs give into their animal instints and call for blood.

  • Djbynum02

I hope they keep him off Monday Night Gootball–I can’t stand the bastard.

  • insideguy

You are absolutely insane. Nothing you just typed makes any sense what so ever. The Nazis, communist, and dictators in Japan were not progressives in any sense of the word. You are to busy trying to extrapolate an ideology to even understand what you are writing. You may disagree with Obama but your comparisons and limited research on Nazis, Communist, and the like would not be acceptable to for a third grade term paper. I suggest you actually do some research on these regimes and get out of your right wing closet.

(Sigh) Those who forget history, thy name is “progressive”.

If I were to say anything to Hank
Williams Jr., I would say; son, you daddy is looking down on you today with
shame. All that money and good friends did you and injustice. You never did grow
    up.

Are commander and chief is a piece of crap who is running this country into the ground. Even though Hank makes no sense in his comparison still its a FREE COUNTRY where we have the FREEDOM OF SPEECH. I mean maybe if Obama wasn’t a piece of crap people wouldn’t have to say it.
