First off We should not blame the victim for the crime. The Man sexually assaulted her. I think saying “Who goes out on a second date with a guy like this” is a bit of a cold, uncaring statement.

However this should be used as a teaching moment. She should say “Ladies, prevent yourself from being the next victim and do your own background check”

I think some people when they blame the victim have a hard time putting themselves in the situation. They look at the event and think how they would have acted. Hindsight is always 20 20.

But there is a teaching moment there. Yes the woman should not have to worry about being attacked BUT that is not the world we live in and there is evil out there so we need to be careful. But when something bad does happen we need to blame the evil and not the victim.

If I go into a dangerous part of the city alone I should not have to worry about being attacked. I shoud be able to walk wherever i want without the fear of being attacked. AND if I am attacked the system should punish the attackers. However I should learn, as well as other people, not to go into unsafe parts of a city alone.

But it’s human nature sometimes to just say “He or She should have known better”

My interpretation is that O’Reilly is saying that the guy could be schizophrenic, which is why a first date may not give a clue to what may occur on a second or third.

And, I haven’t really been following this story other than reading the headlines, but while I understand that it’s a good PR move for Match.com to start checking a database, I believe it’s an added that they may choose to offer, but not their responsibility.

No one ran the old personal ads in your local alt-weekly or the new ones on Craigslist; No one is running the callers to the phone dating services; No one is checking criminal histories at the bar; Match.com can choose to do it and risk loosing a few false positives in exchange for the added sales pitch, but I don’t feel it’s their responsibility

this is a non-story; if you watch the segment you can see that she doesn’t blame the victim…yes, Lis does make those comments, but she clearly says that Match.com is at fault for not wanting to spend the time or money and agrees that the guy is the criminal and the woman is the victim…all Lis was trying to say (yes, perhaps she did so poorly) was that even if match.com had performed the background check, it gives a person a false sense of security because people do lie, etc and that a woman (or man) should take some responsibility for their own safety and not solely rely on others.
