Gay Conservative Group’s Co-Founder Explains His Stance: ‘Gay People Are Living In The Obama Economy, Too’

VIDEO

CNN’s Early Start welcomed Jimmy LaSalvia and Chris Barron — founders of gay conservative group GOProud — to the show on Friday morning, and hit on several issues with the duo, including how they can reconcile their political beliefs with some of those held by certain GOP candidates.

Co-host Ashleigh Banfield asked Barron how he could say that Rick Santorum — whose beliefs on homosexuality, “led to the inability to Google Rick Santorum’s name without seeing a lot of really gross stuff” — would be an improvement over Barack Obama. Barron said that the group strongly disagrees with Santorum, but added that they’re not worried about his candidacy.

“Rick Santorum is not going to be the nominee of this party,” Barron said. “I know that the mainstream media and some in the party want to continue the charade that there is a horse race going on here. Rick Santorum is not even on the ballot in some [states].”

“He’s won three states,” Banfield said. “He swept them with huge numbers.”

“John McCain lost 19 states — 17 of those after he won in South Carolina and Florida — and his nomination was never in question,” Barron replied. “The bottom line is the only candidate who has a national organization that can win this primary is Mitt Romney. I mean, we can continue to pretend that there’s a horse race and I know that the media wants to pretend like there’s a horse race.”

Banfield then asked about the other candidates not supporting the idea of gays in the military, or wanting a ban on gay marriage. LaSalvia replied that Ron Paul doesn’t support an amendment banning gay marriage, and Mitt Romney said “it’s not likely.” He then added:

The reality is, we’re all living in this Obama economy. Gay people are living in the Obama economy, too. And we’ve got to come together. Gay and straight, liberal and conservative, and fire the president.

“The fact is,” Barron added, “that gay people care about things like the economy and jobs and retirement security.”

I don’t understand how a Gay person can be a conservative, other than not wanting to pay more taxes. Same way, some heterosexual males become Republicans when they make it big.

We’re all fed up with Obama’s nonsense. Quit trying to divide us. That’s Obama’s job.

  • Anonymous

Gay people have the right to be fiscal conservatives and be members of any party they choose and shouldn’t be criticised for it by either the left or the right. It’s just a shame for them that the a sizeable chunk of their party currently feels that stripping them of rights and comparing their relationships to bestiality is a vote winner and is more important than focusing on fiscal issues.

I just hope groups like GOProud can help move the Republican party away from the extreme right over time as having people like Santorum and Michelle Bachmann considered viable candidates for president does no-one any good.

How is it that black people are overwhelmingly democrat when democrats instituted jim crow laws back in the day, and today support the welfare industry which is single-handedly destroying the black community?

  • Anonymous

You mean the Dixie South that is now overwhelmingly Republican after the passing of the Civil Rights law. Yeah, really Democrats.

  • Pablo

Overwhelmingly Republican and chock full of black folks. It’s a real headscratcher ain’t it?

  • Anonymous

That of course is predicated on the utter myth that modern Republicans are fiscal conservatives.

  • Anonymous

I think the meaning of the word ‘minority’ passed you by. Isn’t there a reason they are reffed to as minorities, or use just use it when you want to stir up trouble.

  • Anonymous

It must suck when you are Gay and the only way you can defend your party is to say the frontrunner wont win.

But taxes are lower under a liberal, (Obama) than they were under Reagan. And Obama hasn’t raised the corporate tax rate (which has been at 35% since 1993, but under Reagan it was at least 50% or more for 6 years of his presidency).

For the thinking people, here are the facts:

Reagan ->1983:  average income tax rate for family of 4 = 11.06%
Clinton -> 1992: average income tax rate for family of 4 = 9.18%
Obama -> 2010: average income tax rate for family of 4 = 4.68%

I could go on… but, why bother.  Conservatives have no use for facts.

Here’s the big question of the day concerning these two.

Were they were born conservative and chose to be gay?  Or, were they born gay and chose to be conservative?

Some are, it’s just the minority of nutters are in control right now. You know what they say, empty vessels make the most noise so right now, the louder, social conservatives get more attention.

“Gay people have the right to be fiscal conservatives”

Anyone has the right to think what they want, but actions are more credible than thoughts.  If these folks want to belong to a party that is fiscally responsible, then the Republican Party is not the party for them.  Do they not recall the Bush presidency?  I mean, it was only 3 years ago.

  • Anonymous

Why would it suck if you are gay?

  • Anonymous

It really irks CNN and liberals that a gay person, or black, or a cashier (whatever) don’t choose their politics based on the one issue liberals want to lock them in to.  The idea someone could disagree with Obama is upsetting enough for them, but how dare a gay person, who obviously has disagreements with some of the positions of typical conservatives, how could they themselves be conservative – how dare they!   It really pisses liberals off that some people aren’t lemmings, that they choose to think for themselves and care about multiple issues.

  • http://twitter.com/JCP1975 JCP1975

    Really?  I’m not pissed.

Back before the Republicans completely sold out to the Evangelicals, it might defensible to be gay and Republican, but these days it isn’t. The GOP is wedded to a group who thinks homosexuals are damnable in the eyes of god. Of course, this is the same party that runs up bills at Washington, D.C. S&M clubs, but who’s paying attention?

I don’t understand how straight people can be liberal, other than thinking that everybody owes them something, just for fighting through the threat of abortion and surviving!

Now, was my statement any more bigotted or stupid than yours?  Think not…

  • Anonymous

What has abortion got to do with it? are you OK? If you have nothing reasonable to say, you should keep to yourself.

  • Lurch

another self hating gay man, like the log cabin guys, and any non white republican, they think because they carry the torch for the GOP that they will be welcome in the ‘GOP big tent’.  and they sit there at CPAC while the GOP base excoriates gays and minority’s every minute.  its sad to see these educated gays, act like their constituents dont hate them, and want them to burn in hell…  it just shows how cultism will take over even someone who appears to be ok, but is carrying such self hatred that they overlook what is in front of their own eyes.
how many more times will gays watch their own civil rights erode and be shamed by the people who they claim to be a part of, until they realize the GOP hates gays, blacks, and ‘others’…. but they do love their guns…
the gop is the true enemy of the usa.

You are using “averages” extracted from a statistical era without taking into consideration how many “middle class” people were working and contributing to the tax base.  The economy is what will produce tax numbers, and when you have 50% not paying anything, then those numbers as averages come down.

  • Lurch

yeah, all blacks should join the KKK, because they agree with rape and lynching… typical GOP uneducated dolt….

If by chance Santorum does make it through, which I doubt, there are more than 2 votes in my household that will NOT support him.  But, here is the fact, he could easily be “the next anointed one” in the Party.  That scares the shit out of me…though I must say, all the things that Rick cited in 2003 must be something he is familiar with, in the privacy of their own homes.

  • Anonymous

or paying $13,000 by a liar to try to blow smoke to cover his lie.  Oh hell, wrong party!

If you want to have a discussion, start with facts and not preconceived notions of the “enemy”.  Think about the “enemy”.  Our President has painted the republicans with that brush to further his agenda and managed to undo how many years of Presidential behavior that embraced everyone.

If you love your Country and realize you have no choice on the ballot but to vote in a devisive man who harms the Country every time he speaks, you might think of abstaining from the voting process, since I realize you don’t agree with republicans.  The only way to stop the assault on the wedge that is being driven deeper and deeper between people.

I think the reason everyone remembers Reagan so fondly is because the man, besides being the President, was a uniter.  Was a lover of his Country and its’ people and carried himself with class and conviction without demonizing any of us.  You could agree to disagree without being disagreable.   Bush didn’t demonize anyone, and didn’t put his face on t.v. every second day to rebut the horrible lies spread about him.  He acted like a Statesman.  I don’t recall Laura Bush ever saying or doing anything that indicated that she was overstepping the bounds of the wife of a President.  Clinton, was not divisive and managed to work with Gingrich.

There are so many examples in our history of Presidents conducting themselves with class and conviction and leaving the dirty politics for others.

The left demonizes the right regarding their stance on marriage (between a man and a woman) – and changing that to indicate the right hates homosexuality.  Why would the right hate homosexuality?  They don’t, and you and I both know they don’t.  That is wrong and a lie and it’s perpetrated by….the same with abortions.  You don’t agree with abortions, you hate women, not that you love children.  Which brand do you place on a pro lifer?

When the aberition becomes the norm and normalcy is decried, there is a dreadful price to pay.  Read some history.

  • Centrist79

This is a classic case of denial for these two Republicans.

It’s interesting to watch liberals not being able to wrap their heads around the notion of a conservative gay.  Way too much cognitive dissonance there!  LOL

Whether these two gentlemen were born gay or not, it’s obvious they CHOSE to be conservative.   Therein lies the rub.  Even just by looking at them, they exude a disciplined thought process, they are able to articulate ideas, without pushing a radical agenda in your face.  Most of all, they refuse to allow themselves to be stereotyped.

They owned the liberal anchorwoman in this interview.

Was it you or the moderator who removed your hateful comment from below?   You are filled with so much hatred you can’t help but attack those who disagree with you.  You epitomize  hate-filled liberals who have no interest in accepting others have views different from your own.   In spite of what you claim with your hate filled rhetoric most conservatives have absolutely no problem with gays.  Some do, no surprise, some have little exposure or interaction with gays and like you base their opinion on what some ignorant bigot told them to believe.  Many conservatives will speak against gays in a general sense, because they disagree with the lifestyle, but whether that is ignorance, intolerance, or just a preference is open to argument.  Painting all liberals as communists is juvenile, same goes for the hate you spew.

SS,  I could understand why a gay or a black earned $250K+ would support the Republicans but the last couple of Republican adminstrations have not been fiscally responsible even with a Republican controlled Congress.

You really need to read upon your American history.

The Democrats who voted against the Civil Rights acts later became Dixicrats and they are typically Republicans today.

Also the Republicans starting with Nixon created the “Southern Strategy” based upon white resentment of blacks gaining more rights.

LBJ stated after he signed the Civil Rights bills that the Democrats had lost the Southern vote for at least a generation. Well make that two generations and counting.

Rubbish! Your comment made no sense.

  • http://twitter.com/JCP1975 JCP1975

Well, considering Michelle Bachmann, who is considered a conservative leader in your party calls gay people ‘Part of Satan”, then yes, it is kind of hard to wrap my head around why they’d want to be associated with such bigotry and hatred.

Or when Republican House leader from North Carolina referred to gay people as “Things”, then yes, it is kind of hard to wrap my head around why they’d want to be associated with such bigotry and hatred.

or when conservatives at a presidential debate booed a soldier based on sexuality, then yes,  it is kind of hard to wrap my head around why they’d want to be associated with such bigotry and hatred.

    Should I continue?

  • http://twitter.com/JCP1975 JCP1975

I thought we were talking about the two gay gentlemen featured in the above article.  What does the KKK have to do with this?  Oh, I see.  You’re changing the subject because you’re wrong.

  • Anonymous

No it makes no sense for a gay to be a member of a party which bashes gays to gain votes just like the Republican Party uses resentment against racial minorities to garner votes (Southern Strategy). As for someone who is a cashier making a little above minimum wage I have no idea why they would vote for a party who believes that trickle down economics works. And if she’s a values voter well I can’t see how a party that embraces Newt Gingrich as a viable candidate could have any moral values.

Personally I think you need to register to get the newsletter from Newsmax.
    First so you know…They are 100% anti-Obama.

But here is one of the facts that you should know. When you quote 50% not paying taxes…If that number is true…75% of that figure are Americans making more that $250K a year. Yes, I said 75% of those Americans making $250K a year are paying ZERO in taxes. In fact they advertise almost weekly to help “enroll” even more wealthy non-paying Americans into that role.

So we are now left with 25% of the American poor not paying much in taxes. One thing that could account for such a figure is if those tax payers in that percentile happen to be one of the minimum wage earners that has a family of 4. And most likely must either live with his or her parents to afford to survive. Oh wait I forgot we need to reduce that 25% figure by 1/2 (from your figure) so it’s 12.5% of Americans that are working poor, that pay no taxes.

  • http://pulse.yahoo.com/_SMUGSPLRKQOJBS5T6I4S5H2YSE Andy-48

He was the only president that deemed it not necessary to raise taxes to pay for his wars.

  • http://pulse.yahoo.com/_SMUGSPLRKQOJBS5T6I4S5H2YSE Andy-48

Just so you know…The frontrunner is Romney with 112 delegates. Santorum 72, Gingrich 32, Paul 9
So yes, he can say that Santorum won’t win…After all he’s not the frontrunner.

Wait until March 7th, the day after Super Tuesday to say who is the frontrunner.

  • http://pulse.yahoo.com/_SMUGSPLRKQOJBS5T6I4S5H2YSE Andy-48

Well the KKK was started by Confederate Soldiers after the Civil War. In fact you might want to look up the branch of the KKK that was in Saskatchewan in the 20′s.

As for party and the Civil Rights Act of 1964. It was passed with votes from both Northern Republicans and Northern Democrats. As for the KKK fighting against it..I would guess it had both Democrats and Republicans against it.

It is also sad that the Southern Democrats now Dixiecrats aka Republicans were in favor of Jim Crow laws. But the US Supreme Court found in their favor too.

  • BooBoo Bear

OK, since you asked for it…I’m fairly sure that you, your girlfriend/wife, mother and father were all abominations unto God also.

Your womenfolk..Did they were a Latex Bra underneath that Cotton Blouse/Dress/T-shirt? Or actually anything that made it so they were wearing two different fabrics at the same time. They were abominations unto God.

Your menfolk. Did they were Cotton briefs while wearing a Wool or Polyester/Cotton blend Suit? And are you wearing Blue Jeans while wearing Orlon socks?? You’re an abomination unto God.

    Do you shave?
Do you get a haircut?  You are an abomination unto God.

Do you drink a milkshake with that hamburger? You are an abomination unto God.
Do you eat: Lobster, Shrimp, Clams, Oysters?  You are an abomination unto God.

I can go much longer on this list.

  • Anonymous

I get Newsmax…but I don’t make up figures from them, I don’t put out there that 75% of Americans making $250,000 per yr are paying zero taxes..simply because I know that is not true.  You can’t even produce “averages” for that. If indeed that were anywhere near a fact, then Obama pandered to a zero number last campaign, cause he wasn’t going to raise taxes on anyone making below $250,000.  Unless they smoke, drive, buy groceries, pay utilities, go to the dr. or just try to live.  Do you understand?  This time he will try to make those same people think they are better off.  LOL

  • Anonymous

Well the majority gays won’t let the perfect be the enemy of the good. If someone is a gay person would they rather have someone who repealed DADT and won’t defend DOMA or someone who believes gays are an abomination.

  • Anonymous

Did I make any kind of reference to religion?  Are you suggesting if someone believes in god they are a neanderthal?  Do you see the difference in people as matter to antimatter (where one is the complete and total opposite of the other) so since you probably consider yourself relatively normal, anyone who doesn’t agree with you is a deranged freak?   It amazes me how some people can believe that and not see the foolishness of it.

Believe it or not, and apparently you do not, a gay or black or literally any kind of person can have conservative views, can disagree with Obama’s policies without being a racist, and can have a preference for spending money they earn instead of spending the money of other people.   Preference only goes so far however, so just because someone has a preference it doesn’t mean they won’t choose against their preference as needed.   My wife has driven the same car for 14yrs and would like to now buy a new one.  To get what she wants will cost A LOT compared to buying something used.  There are risks when buying used, plus she won’t get the same technology features, plus it won’t have as high a resale value later.  What to do…   Her preference is to buy a particular model new, circumstances has her looking at other brands’ used vehicles.  By the logic of some on this story, she’s a traitor to her primary brand if she doesn’t buy new, but may be an elitist snob if she does by new.  How can both be right?  Can’t you accept both may be wrong?   You can hate conservatives all you want, it doesn’t change that they are likely as ‘normal’ as you or anyone else.

Point taken and I’m not gay but from my perspective some things are red lines.  I don’t care if a politician is aligned with my position on taxes, foreign policy, healthcare and the economy. If they tell me I couldn’t get married, serve in the military and wanted to stop me from adopting children how could I possibly support them?  And last but not least how I could I support a party that has an event like CPAC and tells me I’m not invited?  You’ll take my votes and money but I’m not allowed to participate in the events.  Talk about the mistress treatment.  Some things are about principle.

Uh…H-E-L-L-O, how exactly did you respond to my statement here? Or, are you just upset that the two men interviewed don’t fit your mode or model of a what a male gay sould be like, look like? Not flamboyant for ‘ya? What was missing? The hot pink feather boa?

They weren’t defending their party.  The question was about why they DON”T SUPPORT OBAMA, instead.  The two men made it very clear that there are other issues to consider when supporting a candidate, not only, i.e., gay marriage, gays in the military, etc.

Carter left office with hostages in Iran, an inflation rate of 12%, unemployment 11%, and Prime interest of 21%.  After beating an incumbent president, 1st thing President Reagan did was have the American hostages released in Iran.

Then came Reaganomics, including tax cuts, tax reform, reduction in welfare, reduced all three, inflation, unemployment, and interest, which ALL dropped during his Presidency. He led America through Black Monday, the greatest single day loss and crash of the stock market. He deregulated the airline industry, including breaking the air traffic controllers union, deregulated transportation. 15 million new jobs were created during his Presidency. He rebuilt the military, and had a foreign policy of peace through strength.. He is credited with bringing down the Soviet Union, through intimidation, forcing them to overspend on their military. After 16 years of war, scandals, incompetency, and disastrous Presidencies of LBJ, Nixon, Ford, and Carter, President Reagan restored America’s faith in government, relieved fears, and made America strong and proud again. He also reclaimed America’s place as a World Leader.Probably his greatest asset was his ability to bypass the media, and speak directly and connect with the American people.

Thus, winning his distinction of being called, “The Great Communicator.”

As a gay man, let me explain it to you Chuck and I promise to use small words so you’ll understand. ALL the Republican candidates (except Ron Paul) want to strip us of civil rights. ALL of the candidates have pledged to push for a constitutional amendment making gay marriage illegal. You have a spectrum of bigotry on the part of the major candidates, but it is still bigotry, and they want to enshrine it in the constitution. That’s why being a gay member of Goproud is like being a member of Jews for Hitler.

How many of that 50% live below the poverty level and earn, as individuals, less than $20k a year OR are students in school living with their parents (who also get 100% of their federal withholding back).  Also, that same 50% DO pay taxes. They pay sales taxes, payroll taxes, personal property taxes, food taxes (in states that charge sales tax on food), gasoline taxes (if they drive vehicles requiring gas).  So let’s be clear…it’s 50% of wage earners that don’t pay federal income taxes.  But then, neither do some corporations (GE comes to mind).

And, to Andy-48′s point below…I would be interested in seeing how many Americans making over $250k a year pay federal income tax, as opposed to Romney’s 15% Capital Gains tax rate, which is not federal income tax….so, using Romney as an example, he also paid 0% in federal income tax, though he did pay capital gains.
