Kaitlan Collins Ruffles Karoline Leavitt With Loaded Election Fraud Question

CNN anchor and chief White House correspondent Kaitlan Collins appeared to fluster White House Press Secretary Karoline Leavitt Thursday during the day’s press briefing ahead of President Donald Trump’s planned nationwide address. Thursday was the latter’s first day back in the White House since returning from maternity leave.

Trump’s speech is expected to be about election security and the president’s enduring belief the 2020 election was stolen from him (despite persistent debunking of the claim).

Collins pointed out Trump has been in office for more than 540 days and asked, “If what he says tonight is backed up by evidence, why hasn’t anyone been charged?”

Leavitt answered, “He hasn’t revealed it yet. He hasn’t declassified the documents yet, and you will see what he says tonight, and then we’ll move forward appropriately from there.”

Collins appeared to ask if there would be charges from the Justice Department, to which Leavitt responded, “I don’t speak on behalf of the Justice Department, Kaitlan, you know that.” Collins again asked if any charges will be forthcoming, which appeared to be the straw that broke the camel’s back.

A visibly irked Leavitt responded, “You’ll have to ask the Justice Department. I don’t charge people. I speak on behalf of the president.”

The president is set to deliver his address at 9 p.m. EST. He previously said the speech will concern “really, really big news.”

“Our country has to shape up. But that’s what we’re going to be talking about Thursday, it doesn’t get bigger,” Trump also said. “Without a free and fair elections you don’t have a country. We’ll be discussing other things to, but it’s going to be a very big announcement.”
