Howard Kurtz To CNN: “MSNBC Had No Choice But To Suspend Olbermann”

video

After the initial shock, the media has started to respond to Keith Olbermann‘s indefinite suspension. The Daily Beast’s Howard Kurtz showed up on CNN to discuss the matter and, when asked whether the move was justified, he delivered this SEO-friendly response: “MSNBC absolutely had no choice but to suspend Keith Olbermann.” Then, unable to help himself, he added: “I’m tempted to ask whether he’s now ‘The Worst Person In the World.’” We’ll be hearing that joke for at least a few days.

Kurtz, answering his own question, said that while he thinks that the Countdown host made a “dumb mistake,” there are in fact worse people in the world: Fox News staffers like Dick Morris, Sean Hannity, and Karl Rove are all guilty of far worse political fundraising infractions. Ultimately, Kurtz pointed out that Olbermann’s hypocrisy is his biggest transgression, given that he used his program to lambaste News Corp. for its “eye-popping 1.2 million donation to the Republican Governor’s Association.”

Still, he speculated that Olbermann’s suspension would last only “a week or two.” See the rest of Kurtz’ take in the CNN clip below:

The donations were simply the excuse. Comcast wants to clean house plain and simple. Tingles will be the next to get the flailing axe. Unlike GE, Comcast has a brand they care about and a customer base (unlike GE) that is NOT the federal government, it’s the public.

GE didn’t give a shit about public opinion, their main business was/is government defense, government healthcare, and government green projects, not washers and dryers.

Comcast NEEDS the public to subscribe, they will tone down the hyena’s at MSNBC.

  • tatboy

Keith has always felt he is better and above those he reports about… even at ESPN. He will always be the smartest person in the room in his own mind.

Typical Liberal–make charges but no facts. Just charges. I was a MSNBC viewer, avid Keith Olberman viewer; I now watch FOX. FOX is indeed the better place to get a fair and balanced approach to news. FOX has more liberals appear on their network than MSNBC has viewers. These unsubstantiated charges he makes are nothing but jealousy because these knuckleheads can’t figure out why that is happening. Face the facts, face reality and maybe you’ll understand. It’s the views, words and actions of you and your talking heads like Olberman and Maddow that drives people away.

Obama took money from criminals, foreign enemies, and terrorist to buy his way into the Whitehouse—and this would be much easier to prove. I don’t think Dicky Morris, Karl Rove and Sean Hannity are your problem except for ratings. You guys just don’t understand why Air America failed, do you?

You know nothing about GE, do you? GE is one of the world’s largest lessors/financiers of commercial aircraft (in an industry in which fewer and fewer airlines own their aircraft) and manufacturers of aircraft engines (right alongside of Rolls Royce) and consumer products. GE has enormous consumer credit operations. Might I ask who was peddling this Kart ‘o Krap at which you so willingly partook with glutton-like qualities? What rightist shill said this?

I would also suggest that you have no knowlede of why Olbermann was suspended other than the public anoouncement.

Now, please ascribe to me all the names under which I post and all my essential characterisics, all of which are false, of course, but which give you such pleasure, of which I shall not deprive you, and which merely show your inherent inability to put forth any cogent argument. In other words, now begin the diversions.

Wow. So how do you really feel about him, Robert?

I suspect that Olbermann won’t be the last the be shown the door at MSNBC. The ratings are low – and, no, the “well, they beat CNN” angle isn’t a valid argument. That’s saying that your product is a distant second to Fox and you’re happy with that.

What business owner lives by that philosophy?

One more thing – I’d be a bit surprised if the management there allows Maddow to get away with criticizing their decision on-air. I wouldn’t. That head would roll after openly questioning those who sign her paychecks.

Do they have the guts to show they’re actually the ones in charge there and not the on-air talent? We’ll see.

    Popcorn, anyone?

MSNBC primetime is little more than an infomercial for the progressive-left. Watching Chris Matthews attack Republicans night after night – interrupting them, talking over them, misrepresenting facts, etc. – is akin to a child in the midst of a temper-tantrum when he can’t get his way.

Shultz, Maddow & Ugghh are pure propagandists. Their positions on virtually everything can readily be debunked by a grade-schooler in the course of each intervening commercial break.

Comcast will not soil their reputation over the radical-left advocates on MSNBC. Olbermann is the first to go, but he won’t be the last!

  • Moderate

Someone had to show Olbermann, he is not the boss and must follow the rules like everyone else. His own ego will not be able to handle the suspension.

The incestuous relationship between Immelt and Obama has been well-documented. Just google it and become more informed.

I know a lot more about GE than you think The Real Royal College Kid. Try researching it, their credit arm is big, but it’s tiny compared to their other businesses.

Go back to the dorm Junior, you’re outta your league.

  • redwriteblue

Actually, Keith Olbermann announced on Wednesday night’s program that he was suspending the “Worst Person In The World” segment because he didn’t think it had the impact that it once had.

Keith Olbermann will be back. His is the highest-rated MSNBC show, second only to Bill O’Boring on Fox News Channel at the all important (to advertisers) 8 o’clock hour.

  • ChinaCat

O’Reilly on Election Eve (sarcastically): Don’t watch MSNBC tomorrow night. The hosts over there might light themselves on fire.

Olbermann the day after the Election (with smug condescension): I’m still HERE.

Phil Griffin (before the week was out): Not anymore!!!

“Fox News staffers like Dick Morris, Sean Hannity, and Karl Rove are all guilty of far worse political fundraising infractions”

    Infractions? Fundraising?

Ray, those are not infractions because, rightly or not, Fox News doesn’t forbid those acts. An infraction is a violation of a rule or standard.

And the issue isn’t “fundraising”. It’s donations.

Having Howie comment on this is a wasted of space. He is a CNN hack. Note how he didn’t bother to mention James Carville and Paul Begalla both CNN contributors on the same scale as Rove and Morris. But Howie has to attack Fox….he is just such a typical lefty.

No Howie, FNC is NOT worse. And while you were naming names, why didn’t you bother to name George Stepanapolous — he is the biggest dem operative on air today.

If NBC hadn’t identified Olberman as a “journalist” there wouldn’t have been a problem; but NBC/MSNBC claim their prime timers are real “journalists” when everyone knows better.

Good night and good luck? It should be good night and don’t let the door hit you on the way out.

MSNBC will be a lot better off if they keep KO off the air completely and try to restore some sanity to the network. Having air america on MSNBC is a failure, in the long run, despite MSNBC’s recent move ahead of CNN.

In the all important (to advertisers) 8′ o’clock hour “Countdown” has 3 million viewers, Bill O’Boring has 6 million on the Fox News Channel. As a comparison “NBC Nightly News” averages 9 million every evening.

Rachel Maddow can be a credible journalist like her current promotional ad shows her working-over the nights program copy with her staff, but she is accusing Americans that are concerned about what is happening to their country of being “racists” as she labels the Arizona SB 1070 the “Papers, please” law.

Rachel Maddow has as guests representatives of the “Immigration Rights” groups that are trying to change the image of the Illegal Immigrants in front of the Television News cameras at the demonstrations against the U.S. Immigration Laws they are staging in another attempt to fool the American people:

TRRK, I understand that you were outed by the web host of Olberman Watch as posting under as many as 20 different identities on an average day. Care to comment?

You’re crazy if you think this alone got Keith suspended.
This is payback for past crappola he has unleashed on his own employers.
Not so Teflon Keith was probable the driving force at planning that election coverage abortion….an embarrassment to even MSNBC.

You can tell it’s a kid (or a really immature adult) by all the goofy references he embellishes his posts.

For intance he’ll say something like “I apologize, I must bid you all adieu, as I must pick my PHD educated sister as she is returning stateside from an Art Fair where she was participating in a wildly successfull avante garde show almost shut down by the rebel guard of the oppressive regime in charge..etc etc etc…ad nauseum.

I’ve sometimes wondered whether he is more than one person. I remember way back we got into an argument and he called me a racists (naturally) and said something like, “If you were here in person, I’d be asking if you’d like to step outside and finish this man to man.” A day or two later, I made a reference to that thread, and he denied have called me racists and had no idea what I was talking about with the “let’s take this outside” reference. I don’t know. Maybe he’s just crazy, but the whole thing is deeply suspicious.

BINGO! I’ve been saying the same thing all day long on a variety of sites. TRRK never worked an honest day in his life while I’ve been to GE HQ in NY & their medical unit in Waukesha. Most of its employees couidn’t care less about their comedy evening at MessNBC. I said elsewhere that ComCast is clearing the table and the new management has actual standards. China Cat had a nice comment on how KeithO is the world’s worst colleague, as a friend who worked at ESPN during the Odorboyy era also told me was true.

Why is it that obnoxious multi-posters like TRRK can’t manage to hide their ignorance on virtually any posts. Go to the dunce’s chair in the corner, deposed “king.”

timzank I’ve admired Dan Abrams for his stalwart support of the Duke LaCrosse team and am aware that even libs can have a heart and functioning frontal lobes. Has he ever dropping in like Colby and some of the straphangers have done in the recent past? If KeithO’s genuinely toast, I expect a lot of people hiding out at the moment will come out of the closet to reveal KO tortured cats or had his toes sucked or whatever….! Seriously, I think it’s funny when MadCow goes berserk online and on air, as she did last nite in a program extraordinary for its shallowness and lack of common sense. Plus arm-waving like she was in a Greek village market selling olive oil at a steep discount.

Steve Burke is just the mirror image of Zucker that is needed to bring sanity back to the NBC brand. Although I still like SNL & even 30Rock—wonder what ca-raaazy Baldwin will do after NBC changes hands….? Stay a media czar, but in a cable backdrop?

I just commented to another thread that Keith will be back after about a week and that the Maddow essay may be part of the strategy.

To answer Kurtz’s “what was he thinking” question: He gave some money to three candidates and they received the funds. Whether or not Rachel’s treatise was part of the overall scheme, it appears that through the coverage of Keith’s actions including the Kurtz piece and posts to this and other sites, the contributions of the Fox personalities are being highlighted, which helps communicate the (often belittled) “false equivalencies” narrative that Olbermann has been pushing since the Stewart rally.

  • SteveMG

“I just commented to another thread that Keith will be back after about a week and that the Maddow essay may be part of the strategy”

I agree completely. This talk about him leaving is, for me, without substance.

When he comes back, of course, he’ll use this matter as a springboard (like Ms. Maddow did) to “prove” the difference between “real” journalists like him and “real” news networks like MSNBC and those “frauds” at Fox.

The only substantive change, I think, is that his days of anchoring news events are over.

Tom Brokaw wasn’t only in-country last week, but I understand that he was on NBC broadcast’s coverage of the election. I’d have to go back and look for the links, but it was reported during the ’08 campaign season that he had been disappointed in Keith’s role and if I’m not mistaken, the format for subsequent coverage was tweaked to take Olbermann from being front and center during a news broadcast.

I don’t know if Mr. Brokaw had any direct hand in Olbermann’s recent suspension, especially if it had been Keith’s original desire to make a point, but I’m sure that between the reviews and possibly something Mr. Brokaw said behind the scenes, it’ll be another couple of years until they forget again.

  • Arkansas Steve

I used to like Howard Kurtz. Now he comes across like just another guy who doesn’t get it, meaning doesn’t get the basics of whatever he’s talking about.
He makes points where none exist & he ignores relevant things which don’t coincide with his analysis.

That’s why I discontinued DVRing his program & pretty much just ignore him.

    You’re exactly right my friend.

Howard Kurtz would have flunked out of first year law school with his poor attempt at “issue spotting”.

The issue as it pertains to the suspension is about not getting approval before donating. It has nothing to do with whether a commentator on an opinion-based cable news show should be making a relatively small donation.

And does Mr. Kurtz really think Olbermann, Hannity or Cavuto donating a few thousand dollars to a political campaign is equivalent to the parent of a large news organization (whether it’s News Corp or GE) donating hundreds of thousands to a political organization. It’s apples and oranges (very large oranges) IMO.

  • http://twitter.com/SailRabbits Magister

@Michael_T: The use of “search engine optimization” was the subject of one of Mr. Kurtz more recent, lighter posts that was widely circulated on media blogs. Perhaps Ray’s joke was a bit insidery for those who don’t follow Mr. Kurtz, media writing and the migration of news to the online sphere, but I’m sure the number of readers who got the joke was considerably higher than 10%.

Guess Liberals can’t follow the rules of the company. Only applies to people on the right. He signed papers when he got hired.

And why oh why are the left bringing up Rove making $50 million in fund raising? Anybody with a brain can’t think people like him on FOX are going to quit working for the GOP. Just plain dumb.

  • Cecelia

    Ray,

Kurtz is so lame on this.

Why in the world would he wish to keep Rove or Palin from donating or raising campaign money while commenting for FNC, or James Carville and Paul Begala doing the same while being paid commenters on CNN?

THEY are paid analysts, not journalists or hard news anchors. They are HIRED for their political experience, expertise, insider knowledge, and savvy.

If people think MSNBC policy on private political activity is contradictory and asinine, how much more should they think that Howard Kurtz is being ridiculous with this nonsense.

  • Tedderman

As those of us with an opposing poimt of view are more closely scrutinized and our donationsare monitored by the “Right Wing Media” and the corporations they represent dissent will be further stifled. America is being handed to the “Robber Barrons” once again and without robust “Liberal” media to question these actions the middle class will sink further into the abyss. I don’t care if the Fox/Limbaugh lemmings believe it, it’s happening. And oh, just stick that thumb in your ass, it’s likely that’s what you do anyway.
