Jon Stewart Makes A Case For Obama’s Indefinite Detention Without Trial

Video

Wednesday, Daily Show host Jon Stewart took a look at the passage of a bill that would allow the government to detain certain American prisoners indefinitely, without a trial.

He noted what a brief amount of time it took to discuss such an important move, airing a clip of Sen. Rand Paul calling the bill “unamerican,” and of Sen. John McCain calling out Paul’s “opinion” for possibly allowing American terrorists to go free and continue trying to harm their fellow citizens. Sen. Carl Levin, meanwhile, noted that Al Qaeda brought “that war to our shows” and Sen. Lindsey Graham said they were trying to “destroy our way of life.”

“So we’re gonna destroy it before they can get their hands on it,” joked Stewart.

RELATED: Jon Stewart Takes The Fight To Fox News And ‘Officially’ Declares War On Christmas

Cut to: then-Senator Barack Obama telling an audience in 2007 that “we are not a country that runs prisons that locks people away without ever telling them why they’re there or what they’re charged with.”

But Obama is going to veto this piece of legislation not because he “objects to the executive branch having near infinite power to detain whoever it wants,” as Stewart described it, but because it doesn’t allow him “totally infinite power.”

That said! Prisoners would be freed once “the war on terror ends” and “terror surrenders.”

As for people who feel the passage of this bill wouldn’t impact them personally because 1) they are not terrorists and 2) do not actively support terrorist activity, Sen. Paul reminds us that even people who are “missing fingers” or who own guns or ammo are considered possible terror suspects by the U.S. government and, as such, could possibly feel the impact of this piece of legislation. Or, you know. People who may have, at one time, attended a madrasa, perhaps as a child. Or who have associated with radical thinkers. Or who have routinely hung out with dudes missing a few fingers.

People like…. Well, far be it from me to spoil the surprise.

Rand Paul was the lead Senator trying to protect our 4th amendment from the White House and the Democrats, along with idiot Republicans like John McCain.  Why Stewart got out his stopwatch to somehow imply Rand Paul didn’t do enough makes no sense.  This is where Stewart should be praising Rand Paul, not mocking him.

Stewart was not mocking him, merely making the point that a counter argument is fairly obvious and that Rand Paul summed it up very well. I saw it as praise for Paul, especially since clips of Paul show up again in the bit to once again make arguments against the bill.

Yes. What does that have to do with the topic at hand. Deflect. Deflect.

Jon Stewart is a comedian. Any point of view he may take is from that of a comedian and should be taken with a grain of salt. His whole premise is to make fun of politicians and government and, of course, Bill O’Reilly and Foxnews. I think it is important to point out that Jon is a dedicated Liberal and he will always put that point of view into play. Nothing he has to say is of any consequence to anyone. He may make a few points and jab a few fingers into peoples eyes, but then, so did the Three Stooges. Anyone that takes Jon Stewart seriously on any issue is just as big a clown as he is and should be ashamed of themselves for being so ignorant.

  • Anonymous

He was agreeing with and praising Sen. Paul while mocking the rest of them for not objecting to it. That was the clock point.

Sigh, that’s like me saying anyone who takes you seriously is as big of a clown as you are. Yes Stewart is a comedian. He’s also funny (usually). Turns out though, he’s also smart. You ever try being a comedian? You need to be smart to come up with that stuff, connect the dots in such a way. What I’m trying to stress is, Jon Stewart is funny and smart. Now combine all of that with the fact that he talks to people and connects to some. Therefore, he basically acts as a pundit, taking relevant news and presenting it in a funny way to his audience, who as it turns out are some of the best informed audiences of any show. Now, I’m not trying to brag here or try to say I’m well-informed, because there is a very real possibility that I’m not, but when Stewart pointed out the NDAA, but first act was to go and search it and learn what I can about it. Here’s what I got:

    http://www.opencongress.org/vote/2011/s/218
    http://www.opencongress.org/vote/2011/h/893
    http://www.businessinsider.com/the-horrifying-ndaa-and-jon-stewarts-save-2011-12

That’s a good aggregate of information for you to work as a starting point, and then from there you can learn about how your civil rights are being destroyed and who voted yes for doing so. If you’re going to ignore Stewart because he’s not real news, ignore O’Reilly and Hannity too because they’re not real news either, they’re opinion. They’re basically the editorial of a metaphoric Fox newspaper. They are meant to convey opinions, just like Stewart does, and Stewart is their equal in intellect. Look at the O’Reilly/Stewart debates. The Three Stooges didn’t comment on political issues, but Stewart does and he deserves your respect, just as O’Reilly and Hannity do. As a sidenote: I love how you can claim someone is ignorant without first even questioning how much they know about something. It’s like the epitome of dumb things to say. “You are ignorant because blah blah blah unrelated fact with does not directly affect your knowledge on a subject.”

  • Anonymous

Give credit where it’s due. Rand is on the right side of this, and so are a small group of Democrats and Republicans. If you’re going to wonder why they’re doing so, you might want to think that a belief in Constitutional rights exists on in both parties, but only as a minority.

Along with Blagojevich, Rezko, Holder, etc., Obama will likely issue a blanket pardon for himself on the way out the door.

“Was Fast and Furious All About Gun Control?”

“If the Obama administration did arrange for the shipment of arms to Mexican drug gangs, not for any legitimate public purpose but in order to advance a left-wing political agenda, and those guns were used to murder hundreds of Mexicans and at least one American border agent–which they were–then we are looking at a scandal that dwarfs any in modern American history.”

Why didnt someone just read the 4th Amendment aloud?  The new law is entirely illegal.  They need to pass an Amendment to the Constitution to enact such a law…

  • Anonymous

fast and furious, you mean the policy that was started by the bush administration?

  • Anonymous

False … guess again (and this time, don’t get your information from NBC, or anyother mainstream liberal media source, read it for your self).

  • Anonymous

Well, it is still just comedy. Call it what you want, it is nothing else. I understand the premise and I also understand his point of view, and I even tend to agree with him on some things, but for th most part, it is just comedy. Taking him seriously, or the views that he shares with his audience, is like reading the comics. It is satirical, it is funny, and it can be thought provoking, but it is still the comics.
As to following O’Reilly or Hannity, they are not comedians, although I am sure some would like to think so. Both are Journalists, but they have Opinion-based shows on Fox and they obviously have an agenda. Their audience is probably even more informed than Stewart’s and after all is said and done they are a part of legitimate news organization, which also happens to have the highest ratings of all cable news and network news combined. I think Stewart is funny. But, I do not take him seriously, at all.

it does sorta go to prove the point that texasrght is just another member of the fox news audience that studies show are the most ill informed.

  • Anonymous

The ratings at Fox are no indication of quality. Hannity and ORielly are certainly NOT journalists. I can’t tell whether it’s Jon’s Liberal slant people don’t like or just a misunderstanding of what satire is. It is indeed a comedy show but satire usually reveals something about us, a group or individual, or society in general. Jon has, on a somewhat regular basis made extremely relevant points that those who should be informing us miss entirely with their agenda driven excuse for news.
I didn’t find this bit all that funny because of the serious subject matter. As they have in the past, our own government is eroding the basic rights established in our constitution. Gitmo has been an ongoing insult to the basic rights and principles our troops fight for , and how this horrible bill to bypass due process for American citizens. It’s a huge red flag that people should be aware of and taking a strong stand against.

  • http://twitter.com/sixtus66 Sixtus66

I hear ya! That imbecile in the white house wanting even more power and that buffoon Levin blathering on about the terrorists bringing this to our shores. Please! We have the 4th Amendment to stop things like this from happening. I knew Democrats were stupid, but who knew they were so into taking away our constitutional rights?

  • Anonymous

Do you seriously not see the what’s so wrong about that clause in the bill. Bypass due process and throw “enemies of the state” into detention without evidence or accountability, including American citizens. How could anyone who understands our basic rights, the ones our military risks and lose their lives and limbs for, support something like that. The feeble BS being spouted on the floor of the Senate by McCain, and others should alarm us.

  • Anonymous

He was talking about how little time was spent actually discussing it. It’s very important but they casually limited the time to actually debate the point. It wasn’t mocking Paul, it was mocking the process.

  • Anonymous

If you think satire and comedy cannot carry any intelligent or meaningful weight, I would recommend A Modest Proposal. After you’re done reading that, sit down and reflect on the fact that Stewart is basically the modern day equivalent of what you just read. Repeating over and over again “it’s just comedy, you can’t take him seriously” is only going to make you sound delusional and convinces no one of your argument. Stewart, O’Reilly, and Hannity are all in the same business in my opinion. Being part of a “legitimate news organization” does not make someone a journalist, especially if they’re providing opinion. It just makes them a talk show host who happens to be on the news channel. Don’t try to fit false labels where there are none.

Also, surveys and studies have shown that the Daily Show and the O’Reilly Factor’s audiences are among the most well-informed, though in each study they seem to flip flop on who is the best informed. The people who watch other shows generally tend to be the most misinformed.

Last point about taking someone seriously, if someone brings up good, agreeable, thought-provoking points, why would you NOT take them seriously? From my point of view, you should only stop taking someone seriously when they prove to be a joke (note: not make jokes, but be a joke themselves) or they are a raving madman who believes in the most of insane of insane topics. Methodology of communication (like comedy for example) does not rule out whether a person should be taken seriously or not.

Greg and gabe, the most obvious ” stark difference” was bush let Mexico know of and they
Cooperated in his operation and they were aware of our plans, secondly I’ve heard no reports of bushes operation resulting in deaths. And finally what does unlimited detention have to do with anything we’re talking about other than bringing up owebumbles excuse that ” he did it first ”
You must be so proud of your president.

I don’t think water boarding is torture, but I’m sure the liberal left is very proud of you to perpetuate that mind set, you do know that our military endures water boarding as part of their training?
Tortue is cutting off Daniel Pearls head on video, keeping people hostage running thru the south American jungles for years and then killing them when cornered all in the name of Allah.
I don’t know what it will take other than one of your loved ones being killed by terrorists before you stop buying into this liberal, progressive utopia crap.

Yeah. We just executed Japanese soldiers for doing it to our POW’s in WWII because they were being too sweet.

None of you armchair chickenhawk fearmongers will change my mind on this–go get waterboarded yourself and prove it. I don’t hate Muslims, and you know-nothings who consider all of them evil can go pick up a gun and go shoot them yourselves, on your dime, and in your name.

One of Bush’s operations ended up in thousands of deaths: The Iraq War.

And try to understand this: I loathe Obama–but Bush was not much better, if at all. He set the stage for Obama, he started off the TARP rubbish, he passed Medicare part D, No Child Left Behind and cemented the neoconservatives in positions of power. In that sense, he is worse than Obama, because I don’t really care much about the left and their constant whining for more taxes and more “safety” nets.

So when I see alleged “conservatives” like yourself who’ve bought into the neocon mindset, it makes me sick. As you probably don’t know, the neoconservative philosophy is based on depravity gleaned from Trotskyism, which explains why you would defend torture (at least when it’s done by “your side.”)

  • BooBoo Bear

Who is Holden? If you mean AG Eric Holder there is an R at the end of his name not an N.

  • BooBoo Bear

Now, if you don’t think Water Boarding is torture…why did we put Japanese soldiers who were convicted of it in prison for at least 15 years. I highly doubt any of our military goes through waterboarding training…Unless it’s how to carry it out.

As for Daniel Pearl, I do feel for his family. But you also need to see it from the other side. We used White Phosphorus on 200,000 women and children. Burning the skins off them while they were still alive in the city of Falujah, which is a war crime because our Helicopters dropped in on the Civilian neighborhoods. We’ve also killed another 800,000 Iraqis on top of that.So the Iraqis have quite a bit more beheading to do to even catch up with all of the people we killed. Shoot, if they killed every American over there they wouldn’t even come close to our one million Iraqi deaths.

The “people” that held prisoners in the South American Jungles mostly in Columbia were Christians not Muslims. Practically everyone who lives in South America is Catholic. With the exception of the Guyana’s..Dutch Guiana-Surinam, British Guiana aka Guyana, and French Guiana. The Christians is these three countries might be Protetants other people in South America are Amerindians.Once again no Muslims.

You might want to learn about ‘The School Of The Americas”. It was a School for teaching “soldiers” from South American countries how to carry out what would be considered terrorist acts upon their countrymen.

Things such as the Argentine Air Force dropping thousands of leftist students into the Atlantic Ocean.

Teaching the Guatemalan Army how to carry out truly Terroristic campaigns upon civilian populations.

The list could go on…With members of other nations military’s..

If you want to bitch about the Iranian Hostages..It was basically about pent up frustrations..We deposed their democratically elected government in 1953..And installed the Shah who under his SAVAK the Shah’s Secret Police. Who used torture upon his people killing thousands.. Our CIA taught them Nazi techniques. They even had others shoving broken glass up the ass then pouring boiling water up there too. Hanging weights to men’s balls. Pulling teeth as well as finger and toe nails all without anesthesia, electric shocks, beatings, etc.
