Keith Olbermann Suspends ‘Worst Persons’ Segment Until Further Notice

video

Longtime fans of Countdown may have been disappointed to learn tonight that one of the franchise segments, “Worst Persons,” is no longer – at least for the time being. Why? Well as host Keith Olbermann explains in the segment below, its original reason for being (Tucker Carlson?) no longer seems relevant. Oh, and it’s probably more than just a coincidence that Jon Stewart held up Olbermann as an example of the divisive nature of cable news (among many others) during the Rally to Restore Sanity.

Perhaps the biggest takeaway from the “sanity rally” was that cable news programming, specifically those who successfully traffic in “opiniontainment” like Fox News and MSNBC, is not helping our country, but rather is hurting the public discourse, at least in the eyes of the rally’s host. This raised the ire of at least one cable news host, Keith Olbermann, who, after seeing his own heated political rhetoric amidst Fox News personalities (and others), expressed his outrage over Stewart’s apparent false equivalency between him and his political opponents.

Olbermann used that as an introduction into his explanation behind suspending the popular (and yes, hyperbolically divisive) segment:

The overall message that the tone needs to change, was not lost on any of us. The anger in this news hour was not an original part of it, nor was it an artifice we added to it. It was a response to a threat to this democracy posed by Mr. Bush and now by his lineal descendants. The anger happened, it will still happen, it is not for ratings and it is not ‘get angry first and find a reason later.’

But there is an institutionalization of it that may no longer be valid. That is the ‘Worse Persons in the World’ Segment. Which started, of all things, as a way of defending Tucker Carlson. Its satire and whimsy have gradually gotten lost in some anger, so in the spirit of the thing, as of right now, I am unilaterally suspending that segment with an eye towards discontinuing it. We don’t know how that works long term. We might bring it back. We might bring back something similar to it, might kill it outright, and next week we will solicit your input.

Its just that today, given the serious stuff we have to start covering tomorrow, we think its the right thing to do short term and then we will see what happens. And we’ll also see if anyone else, on tv, or radio, will do something similar.

Olbermann has never been one to shy away from a fight, as evidence by his Saturday tweet that was critical of Jon Stewart’s media critique. This makes his suspension of “Worse Persons” all the more impressive. Media critics are certain to predictably say that Olbermann somehow caved to Stewart’s critique, but that would miss the point entirely. What Olbermann announced was remarkably sane, and regardless of where one finds him or herself on the political spectrum, he should be lauded.

back to the topic: I watched a bit of Olby tonite and noticed that it seemed like his meds were finally working or something. I didn’t put it together with the Stewart rally but yeah, if that’s the only thing that comes out of it, that’s enough to make me say THANK YOU COMEDY CENTRAL!

  • Seeing November From My Window

Don’t worry Ruth, no way he can hold it together more than a day or two.

  • dhg

Too bad he isn’t suspending the rest of his show until further notice,I guess he didn’t want to disappoint the 4 or 5 still watching it.

I hope the GOP wins big for the simgle reason that it might cause Olbermann’s over inflated head to explode.

  • Cancon2

He got called out, threw a fit in the TUB while he twitted away all weekend and then, dumped an insane segment called, get this “Worst person in the World”.

Seriously, he had a spot on his show dedicated to the worst person in the world ? People actually had respect for someone who declared other people, the worst?

No wonder this maniac is ridiculed.

lol..I agree. Oblermann’s show is based on vicious personal attacks, partisan juvenile swipes, snide innuendos against anyone he disagrees with and that makes up 90% of his show.

Watch…I bet he won’t last A COUPLE OF DAYS before he loses it and goes back to his usual trade of personal attacks and vicious sophomoric humor, because that is what makes Olbermann…well, Obermann.

Yes, poor bath-boy got his diapers in a bunch and had to spew out his predictable hate.

Now if MSNBC could just suspend his show until further notice!

  • Oregon Conservative

It’s appropriate that the penultimate to his head exploding tomorrow night would be to discontinue the worst minute in television.

Bye Bye Keith. It’s been real.

  • Michéle

It can’t be news that the “worst person” was divisive. Actually one doesn’t need to see the segment because he generally rotates the names, only the reason changes. There are blogs that talk about his show, with his ego I am sure he knows not all American’s are fond of him. It was great to watch Sunday pre game show now that he is not affiated.

Keith loves to be angry, it is his brand, he doesn’t want civility. Will Schultz stop psycho talk, let’s see others at the network step up. Pinheads or patriots is silly but the items he sells as a result of that goes to various charities to include our military, so I mute the channel.

I am not a fan of using degrading words to describe someone, I have my issues with FOX and CNN and I will surf into Keith’s show, he has an hour to discuss anything, but it is predictable.

I wonder with new ownership, what changes will happen with the network. Just recently I read that Brian Williams doesn’t want to be associated with the cable network. More is going on than what we see.

  • stehil912

But if Olbermann gets rid of the anger, what’s left? There’s certainly no intellectual dialogue and debate, since Olbermann runs and hides from those with dissenting views and has always surrounded himself with bootlickers who parrot his every opinion. Countdown has always been about angry rants and it’s not clear Olbermann is capable of any other approach.

In another Olbermann related story Olbermann’s ratings Friday were 1.066 in prime time 8pm, and Bill O’Reilly’s was 3.242 at the same time.

O’Reilly’s numbers for his repeat 11pm show were 1.527 beating out Olbermann’s prime time slot.

O’Reilly’s combined Demo numbers were larger than Olbermann’s total viewers.

The anger you see here from some-directed at the host of tv’s best show, Keith Olbermann-is validation that he, unlike Stewart, will NEVER be guilty of Stockholm syndrome. When Stewart mixed MSNBC ROYALTY in the mix with the gutter rats from focks, he was guilty as charged of the aforementioned syndrome. I hope Stewart ends up having to rename his show ‘The Faily Show’. • Arthur (Not a Political Comic)

I’m late to this party, but I will go ahead and commend him on this. Olbermann got called out. First, he was angry, so he wrote that tweet, then he reflected on it, and decided that perhaps steps should be taken to “better” himself. Kind of fascinated that he would do that. Don’t think there is anyone else on right now who would do this. Doesn’t help ratings (After all, as someone pointed out earlier, it’s the negative that attracts his audience, the same as O’Reilly, thus this isn’t going to help things.). He’s doing the right thing, believe it or not and he’s probably going to have his feet held to the fire (see the previous 100 or so comments) because of it. You wouldn’t see Ed Schultz or Dylan Ratigan doing this. Possibly Chris Matthews. You certainly won’t see Hannity or O’Reilly. I hope it succeeds though, because this is the kind of steps that need to be taken to get political discourse away from the negative and focused on finding solutions.

  • iTamra

that was my favorite part of the show. if we don’t call out some of the vile things informed of in Worst Persons segment, people will become complacent about things such as making fun of suicidal gay teens, lying OPENLY while running for office and more.
