Lawrence O’Donnell Crushes Parker Spitzer In Battle Of First Month Ratings

CNN’s Parker Spitzer and Lawrence O’Donnell‘s The Last Word on MSNBC both had their first full month.

Here’s how each show did – and the rest of October ratings notes for MSNBC and CNN.

• O’Donnell’s first month was strong, beating Anderson Cooper at 10pmET in both total viewers and the A25-54 demographic. The program averaged 253,000 in the demo and 881,000 in total viewers.

> Update: Year-to-year, Cooper was up 9%, while MSNBC was up 11% and FNC was down 6%.

Parker Spitzer – not as good. The show finished in 4th place at 8pmET, behind MSNBC and HLN. It was the 32nd consecutive month Keith Olbermann topped CNN at that hour. Parker Spitzer averaged 506,000 in total viewers and 145,000 in the demo. But that includes miner night – taking that out of the equation, the averages drop to 428,000 and 121,000.

Rachel Maddow‘s 9pmET show didn’t just beat CNN’s Larry King for the 9th consecutive month in both categories. She also topped Olbermann in the demo.

• In the early prime battle of 5-8pmET, Wolf Blitzer won 5, Ed Schultz won 6 and Chris Matthews won 7.

• Among morning shows, Morning Joe beat American Morning in the demo, but Robin Meade topped them both on HLN.

• MSNBC won in prime time in both categories, while CNN won in daytime (9amET-5pmET) in both categories. In total day, MSNBC won in demo and CNN just barely edged out MSNBC in total viewrs.

And now, back to elections.

Robin Meade is the answer for CNN , if they want an hour or two of straight news in the evening . Shepard Smith is kind of tabloid-y . John King is dull , and Big Eddie don’t watch MSNBC at that hour because he just ate and prefers not to puke .

First time I have seen someone reporting on the biggest losers and never mentioning the big winner.

    Hooray for Lawrence!!
He needs to work on keeping his anger in check. The more comfortable he gets the more testy he seems.

We don’t need another fucking Ed Schultz on MSNBC. :-)

All of them got obliterated by Fox.

I have tried to watch Parker/Spitzer, but can’t finish a show. There is something missing, energy, or perhaps a back ground in anchoring a show. I doubt they will be around for the 2012 election.

In other words, he has Megyn Kelly disease. He seems like he is always snapping at or lecturing his dissenting guests.
Take it down a notch tyvm.

Fox News Channel is still on top of the cable news heap.

    A more appropriate news headline.

That headline has all the excitement of dog bites man or a weather report in Southern California.

Spitzer is in the wrong format w/ the wrong co-host. Parker is intelligent & holds her conservative own on the show, but isn’t at the same level of personality that Spitzer is. Every time he opens and she comments or vice versa, he’s at a 10 and she’s at a 2. It makes for an unsettling dynamic to the show. Not to mention, the pre-taped interviews and the transitions between segment cuts just doesn’t feel right. All around a bad production by CNN. I think Spitzer would be better served w/ his own show instead of trying to play him opposite to a co-star. Then again, CNN tends to play middle than to play spearhead with a singular view like Fox News or MSNBC.

BTW, I’d assume they don’t include Fox News in this piece since they’re so far ahead in ratings than these 2 networks. Not at all saying Fox is better, just far more watched removing it’s relevancy in comparing these 2 programs.

Fox is not a news station. Fox is a comedy station.

    Crushes??
    Come on Steve.
Are you trying to get a job at MSNBC??
A test pattern CRUSHES CNN these days.

So if Tea Party people are “tea baggers”, does that mean people they beat are the TEA BAGGED? In ‘tea bagging’ it is better to be the tea bagger than the tea bagged….lol

You should go on Lawrence O’Donnell, because that made absolutely no sense. Try sentence structure and comprehension. You might have better luck.

    Megyn is a snapper?

  • libra blue

I wonder if Anderson, who has had a show on CNN for years, is embarrassed to be beaten by someone like O’Donnell?

McDonald’s is also the most popular restaurant in America. Fox News, like McDonald’s is the lowest common denominator. Thank goodness no one I know personally watches Fox News.

  • VRWC Destruction Machine

O’Donnell should be ashamed of himself. Beating Parker Spitzer in the ratings is like shooting fish in a barrel…even from a helicopter.

I assume watching CNN or MSNBC is like being served a plate of shit from a roach coach. Of course your friends don’t watch Fox News, just as long as you feed them, keep their water bowl filled and walk them a couple time a day they will always lick your face.

Agreed. Also, judging from this and some of its’ prior comments, I don’t think English is it’s first language. It has a problem relating coherent arguments.

  • Nachi

Dumbed down Murcuh isn’t bright enough to watch Parker Spitzer.

Yeah, but it wouldn’t really be “news” would it? Hell, they’re so far in front of the others, it would only be news if they slipped in the ratings.
