‘Trump Is Losing!’ CNN Data Guru Breaks Down President’s Jaw-Dropping Plunge on Tariffs

CNN chief data analyst Harry Enten warned that President Donald Trump has suffered a staggering collapse in public support over his signature tariff regime, declaring that the president is now “losing” badly on the policy he says American voters “hate.”

Appearing on CNN News Central with anchor John Berman, Enten pointed to polling showing a dramatic reversal from the 2024 presidential campaign, when Trump held a commanding advantage over Democratic rival Kamala Harris on tariffs.

“Yeah, I would just say that President Trump is losing on tariffs. He is losing on tariffs,” Enten declared. “He was trusted more by 22 points over Kamala Harris, very much in the green, very much in the positive territory. Look at this drop. Now his net approval rating down through the floor of the Saint Lawrence River, 30 points underwater!”

Enten calculated that as a “52-point switcheroo,” before highlighting an even more striking number among independent voters.

“With independents he’s 60 points underwater when it comes to tariffs,” he said. “Americans hate the tariffs and they are taking their anger out on President Trump.”

A stunned Berman asked: “60 points underwater?”

“60 points underwater on tariffs. Yes. I double, triple, quadruple checked that,” Enten replied. “That is right. He is 60 points underwater on tariffs.”

The numbers were similarly bleak when voters were asked specifically about imposing new tariffs on Canada. Enten said net support among the overall electorate stood 33 points underwater, while independents opposed them by a 44-point margin.

“They don’t like the tariffs overall. They don’t like the idea of new tariffs on Canada even more so,” he said.

Enten contrasted Trump’s position with that of Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney, whose polling has moved in the opposite direction since the trade war started.

“Mark Carney is winning. Two thumbs up. That’s what Canadian folks are giving Mark Carney,” Enten said, while noting Trump’s overall net approval rating stood 21 points underwater. He added that Trump had not registered a positive overall net approval rating in a poll since shortly before his 2025 “liberation day” tariff rollout.

The polling disparity could also carry consequences if Washington and Ottawa return to trade negotiations, Enten argued.

“They know that President Trump is playing from a weak hand and Mark Carney is playing from a strong hand,” he said. “And that is why they have walked away from the table.”
