Morning Joe Panel ‘Cringing’ Over Excess Coverage Of NPR ‘Half Minute News Story’

Video

With continuous resignations in the wake of the NPR hidden camera sting operation, the Morning Joe panel discussed whether NPR should continue to be federally funded, but did not seem happy to have to talk about it. Sitting in for Joe Scarborough, Mike Barnicle summed up the opinion of most on the panel when he suggested “talking about NPR, it’s ridiculous. It’s tedious.”

There was disagreement amongst the panel whether NPR should continued to be funded by the federal government. Barnicle believed NPR should just have their budget reduced, Pat Buchanan argued they should not be funded at all and be forced to compete in the marketplace just like any other radio station, and John Heilemann thought NPR would actually be better off not taking the money so that we no longer needed to discuss the issue. Co-host Mika Brzezinski expressed hesitation to give too much attention to the NPR hidden camera footage, saying “I’m cringing – although we cover it – we have to, I guess?” Carl Bernstein agreed it should be covered, but that it was only a “half minute news story.”

Bernstein concluded, “this is not important. NPR has a real function. It plays more country music than almost anything for the red state folks. Let’s get on with it.” Buchanan agreed, he too likes NPR for it’s country music.

‘Morning Joe Panel ‘Cringing’ Over Excess Coverage Of NPR ‘Half Minute News Story’’

prime example why i dont pay attention to that show

  • bobmoses

Fair enough, but those liberal hypocrites were loving talking about the Walker story and did no such sniffing then.

Morning Joe has turned into just another mindlessly partisan MSNBC entry. Too bad. It used to be a great show.

The story of black separatist groups made MSNBC cringe so much, they wouldn’t even read it.

  • Color Me Badd

The only people that care about this story are the same people who think Sarah Palin is a viable Presidental candidate, there are more important issue to be talking about in this country.

Eric Cantor needs to take his job a lot more seriously, where are the jobs Mr. Cantor? Hope you manage to find some while you are trying to defund big bird.

We need to get secret mics in union offices, school super’s offices, CBS offices, NBC offices, ABC offices and Tommy Christopher’s office. On second thought don’t need one in Tommy’s office, he says all his biased stuff right here in front of everyone.

  • ModerateMan

Is there one person out there that thinks it was Vivian Shiller that caused NPR to have a liberal bias? Or course not! Then why does NPR think that getting rid of her is going to fix this problem? “Out of touch” doesn’t seem strong enough here.

  • catfishjuggling

Cue the comments about how no one is watching liberal MSNBC. And how NPR is liberal anyway.

Comments to be made by people who are (at best) underachievers in life. I mean who teh hell is posting on this site in the middle of the day (and to save you time: I am included).

And then those comments will be read by upards of 70-80 people.

    And repeat story.

MSNBC discussing a network, other than Fox News, unbelievable.

I like NPR also, particularly its science reporting. But there is no doubt that the views expressed by the likes of Schillers 1 and 2 reflects the prevailing view at the organization–as well as that of Carl Bernstein, the over-bloated Art Garfunkle of investigative journalism.

Hey fool, so you liked those polls that said Gov. Walker was unpopular. LOL here is one you will like.

A Reuters/Ipsos poll showed on Wednesday the proportion of people who believe the United States is on the wrong track rose seven points to 64 percent from February, in a fresh challenge to President Barack Obama.
It was the highest number of people in an Ipsos poll who think the country on the wrong track since Obama took office in January 2009. The survey comes as many indicators show an improving U.S. economy.

His approval is now 45% and disapproval at 48% according to Gallup today. Poor Obama.

Been listening to NPR all over the USA since the 70s and never heard country music once that wasnt just bumper music.

Heard plenty of sympathetic stories on terrorists, islamists, socialists, unions, gays etc and plenty of condemnation of just about anything christian and/or conservative (with the required disjointed music played afterward, so obvious), guess I havent been listening long enough.

I mean, I’m pretty libertarian but not a super doctrinaire one, so when statists argue about the need for public roads and whatnot, I can see their point. Also, I am almost positive there is something in Jefferson’s letters about what an intolerable tyranny it is to force a man to pay for Garrison Keillor.

    Hey Gordon–

Being serious here. I wake up every day sure of one thing: I really don’t know everything.

What is it like to wake up every day so sure that you do? More importantly, what is is like to be convinced that whatever percentage (let’s say 30%) of your fellow citizens are your enemies just because they have different political views from you? It really boggles my mind.

And if you wonder why I keep running at you? It is because you are a sad bully and I always believed in calling those type of people out. And your dreadfulness has nothing to do with your politics. There are plenty of sad people like you on the left.

Popular, contemporary country could be advertiser supported in most markets and it’s the stuff from off the beaten path and the back of the album that the NPR affiliates highlight.

With that said, I revealed in a way back Mediaite thread that I listen to the webstream of Louisville’s WFPK quite a bit and I consider “Woody’s Roadhouse” (midnight to 6AM Central) which plays a lot of fifty to a hundred year old blues, country and other styles of roots music one of the best shows on the the radio.

When I lived in New Mexico, I’d listen to a show called “Folk Routes” that describes itself as featuring “The best in folk, blues, bluegrass, and beyond” every Saturday morning. I’d also listen to other shows with a country flavor and a quick glance at KUNM’s schedule of musical programs lists some of these other titles.

To all the naysayers: The NPR affiliate(s) serving your individual areas are locally programmed, so if after checking your local station’s site, you feel they should add another nationally-distributed program, I suggest you use their feedback forms and enlist your friends.

Also, I believe without exception, all NPR affiliates do some kind of streaming or podcasting across the ‘net, so if there’s a show that you’d like to try, it’s super easy to give a listen.

  • http://www.facebook.com/people/John-Martin/1646024347 John Martin

I think that this story is yet another example of the blatant hypocrisy of the liberal elite. Schiller was whoring the integrity of NPR for some money – or he was speaking from the heart. Either one is appalling. If a conservative was caught saying some of the things Schiller said, NPR would have devoted a whole hour excoriating that person, the republican party, the tea party, conservatives in general, and – ahhh, let’s get the Ira Glass or those Wait! Wait! Don’t tell me folks in to lampoon how stupid all conservatives are…..oooo! oooo! and don’t forget Sarah Palin!

I would hope it’s not just the 1-3% of the total revenue NPR gets from the government that is going to be lost – I hope that a number of people who think that NPR is ‘unbiased’ will finally wake up and hang up when the unwashed, hairy-armpitted hippie girls call asking for your money during the eternal pledge drive……

  • http://twitter.com/SailRabbits Magister

@John Martin: I listen to their news programs if I’m in the car with the radio turned on, but the overwhelming majority of an NPR affilate’s programming day is music and that why I gladly donate to two stations, plus I give additional money to a local unaffiliated community radio station. It’s pretty much the formula that I’ve used for years and while I appreciate NPR’s longform news, it’s the music that keeps me from switching stations.

Sorry but it’s different from five years ago when people were being overpaid when the unemployment rate was 5%. Bookkeepers were getting paid like CPA’s, and business paid a premium for help. That has changed and when I hear people turn down jobs because it’s not to their pay scale it makes me puke. That’s how supply and demand works in the private sector. Too bad the government and state’s didn’t look at it this way because now they’re paying the piper.

As bad as Morning Joe is with Joe there, it is worse when Mika is running things around the table. Someone please give her a personality. One without passing judgment on everyone. She ain’t God even though in her little mind she thinks she is. And good grief, dump that Mike Barnicle guy. I’d rather watch paint dry than listen to him.

If NPR’s reportage was any more politically correct, it would be comatose.
Do you ever hear them screaming and name calling as the folks on commercial radio do?
We need NPR as a standard of what mature, intelligent reporting should be.
