Pro-Veteran Spokesman Is Unhappy Sarah Palin Is Stealing His (Rolling) Thunder

video

Rolling Thunder is a non-profit organization which is dedicated to advocating on behalf of Prisoners of War and larger veteran issues and is best known for its annual motorcycle rides in Washington, D.C. on Memorial Day. Turns out that potential GOP candidate Sarah Palin has announced plans to attend the Rolling Thunder event at the Washington Mall this weekend, which according to Rolling Thunder spokesperson Ted Shpak, is a big distraction.

During an interview with MSNBC’s Andrea Mitchell, Shpak seemed particularly miffed that Palin was planning on attending the rally and made the point that she wasn’t invited. Rolling Thunder does not endorse candidates and seemed annoyed that his cell phone would not stop ringing since this news broke.

However, not everyone associated with Rolling Thunder seems annoyed by Palin. ABC News blog The Note reports that some chapters are very excited to be joined by the GOP presidential hopeful:

“I think that’s wonderful,” said Gerri Tramel, president of one of Rolling Thunder’s Tennessee chapters. “Anybody that’s involved — Republican, Democrat, independent, whatever — if you’re involved with our veterans, I think that’s wonderful. Not just Sarah Palin — anyone that’s a politician.”

For more than 20 years, as many as half a million motorcycle riders from across the country have descended on Washington, D.C., during Memorial Day weekend to raise awareness about prisoners of war and those missing in action. Rolling Thunder announced Thursday that Palin accepted an invitation to participate in its May 29 rally. She’ll kick off her One Nation Tour the same day, a bus trip along the northeast coast that aims “to educate and energize Americans about our nation’s founding principles.”

Asked how Palin came to be involved with the rally, Rolling Thunder spokeswoman Nancy Regg said, “I honestly don’t know.”

What is it with these dumb a$$es? Their partisanship (hate) is SO strong that they are willing to turn down attention/donations for the causes they supposedly care so much about? First the woman whining about Beck having a certain day available and now this dude calling Sarah Palin (who, whether you love or hate her, definitely brings people out) a distraction by attending his supposed “cause”?

    Sad….

If you have not figured it out, MSNBC and Obama determined that the Thunder brigade had to be addressed.

They thought that bringing on one freak would help the cause. I wonder if he actually belongs to any group?

why do people, if it is truly about the *cause* protest when someone with high visibility is shedding light and attention on the event?

“she wasn’t invited” oh grow up. her kid serves, she supports vet issues, and she rides a motorcycle. And she was invited!

No longer able to draw this kind of crowd, the next best thing is to show up at one. Now if you want to know who this guy is, he’s the Director of Rolling Thunder. Don’t get mad because this guy can see her for the opportunistic harpy that she is. He doesn’t share your undying devotion to the quitter. Deal with that. This is his group not hers and the only reason she’s going to be their is for cheap publicity. Who is the person who invited her because it clearly wasn’t the Director. Thank goodness she won’t be screeching her emply platitudes and incoherent word salads on stage.

Really why? Because her son cut the brake lines of Wasilla school buses and he plea dealed to serve in the army? Notice he served and hasn’t returned to the army. Bless him at summer camp (non combat) for his year compared to what his peers served

If Sarah Palin wants to support the troops why doesn’t she go to Afghanistan now, as opposed to visiting her son in Iraq 3 years ago on Alaska’s dime?

Another lesson in how leftist media operates. They dig up the one malcontent they could find to shit all over Palin’s appearance.
Never mind any of this stuff:

(ABC News) – For the riders of Rolling Thunder, the news that Sarah Palin will participate in their national rally on Sunday came as a surprise. A welcome surprise.

“I’m not the person that invited her,” she said. “We send letters to people all the time and invite them. We invited her to ride, she has accepted and she and her husband have both agreed to ride for us.”

Regardless of Palin’s political agenda — the “Will she or won’t she?” fervor over her potential presidential run reached new heights this week — the members of Rolling Thunder agreed her participation is a boon.

“If she wants to support the troops, we’re all for it,” said Greg Benson, president of Rhode Island’s Rolling Thunder chapter.

“I certainly welcome any positive publicity surrounding our cause, anything to bring attention to POWs and MIAs,” said Jeffrey Stewart, who leads a Rolling Thunder chapter in New Hampshire, a state that will be crucial to Palin if she runs in 2012. “Whether it’s a celebrity or a politician-celebrity — I’m not exactly sure what she is right now — having Sarah Palin there means more people will be paying attention to our cause.”

It wasn’t a public invitation and I’m sure she gets several, if not dozens of invitations every day, the majority of which probably go right into the recycle bin without a word.

No, I’m not going to call her names, but there will be media on the mall; I’m sure she has several supporters among the Rolling Thunder ranks and there’s a media void on Memorial Day weekend in which she could try to fit.

Unlike some hypocritical politicians who make pompous statements like “it would be wrong to spike the football”, and then proceed to spike the football and spike the football and spike the football, Palin’s actions tend to follow her words. She has previously stated that she does not want to be a distraction from other events, and she has cancelled appearances when her presence would be such a distraction. So, I expect that if the Rolling Thunder folks don’t want her – or any politician – to be part of their event, she’ll go elsewhere. (Although there does seem to be conflicting reports of whether she was, in fact, INVITED to participate.)

@OxyCon & @CJD Ohio 1: According to @Sara’s Politico link, an invitation from an Alaskan group was extended to Ms. Palin as early as the 13th. The first anyone heard of it was just a few days ago, which is why I said that it wasn’t a public invitation and if she hadn’t have agreed, not to mention announce her participation herself, we never would have known.

As for the idea that Tommy Christopher may be roaming the Mall and if he were to run into a person from this one Alaskan group, who was also privy to the idea that someone in their chapter had emailed Ms. Palin and if Ms. Palin had simply trashcanned their invitation as she likely does several a day… if Tommy were to have written a column (we’re knee-deep in ifs by now), but if he had ran into this one individual and if he had written a column, then somebody would probably produce an invitation to Barack Obama… let’s see… Bill Richardson has been photographed on a motorcycle, Chuck Norris probably has a standing invitation, etc., etc.

I’m sure all of the local chapters issued invitations to their state’s favorite sons and daughters, but those who don’t come, especially those as popular and heavily scheduled as Ms. Palin aren’t generally trashed by their inviter. Under your scenario that someone may whine to the press because they felt dissed by everyone they invited, who chose not to attend, the fact that someone didn’t respond or refused the invitation would only be known to those who invited them, so they’d have to tell.

I’ve personally been involved in a few lobbying efforts over the years for various causes and a few times we’ve held events to which we’ve invited politicians. Never have any of these groups issued a press release listing those who chose not to attend, rather we provided a press availability and highlighted those who showed.

I really don’t know how else to say it, so maybe we should call a truce.

I’m sure more than a hundred public figures received some type of communication inviting them to the event. It could’ve been via a formal, embossed invite, an email as it was in this case or perhaps someone said something in a handshake line at last year’s state fair. The only one who knows to whom an invitation was extended is the personor chapter which extended it, so for the press to find out, they’d have to complain.

Sara’s Politico link says that an Alaska group invited Ms. Palin as recently as May 13th, if not earlier. The video and other press reports indicate that the national group was not aware of the invitation and there’s nothing to indicate that Ms. Palin had accepted or declined until her office issued a press release.

this ted dude is a hater, and making a huge stupid ugly partisan issue out it, and andrea took full advantage of the situation to bash palin.

Asked how Palin came to be involved with the rally, Rolling Thunder spokeswoman Nancy Regg said, “I honestly don’t know.”

Stewart considers himself a Republican. While he’s not gunning for Palin to run in 2012, he would like more politicians to recognize the country’s veterans, as she’ll do this weekend. Like many of Rolling Thunder’s members, he’s a veteran himself, having served in the Army during the 1980s.

“I’d love to see [President] Obama walk out and say, ‘Thank you,’” he said. “I’d love to see [Vice President Joe] Biden come out and say, ‘Thank you.’ Anyone who wants to be president, I’d love for them to come and acknowledge us.”

As confident as I am that America made the right decision, the Obama hype during the 2008 election was a little much. But all those criticisms that he was all style and no substance, that he was more interested in being a celebrity than serving the people, that he was a blank slate onto which his supporters projected whatever they wanted – it all turned out to be true. About Sarah Palin.

It saddens me when I see people overlook her glaring shortcomings. America deserves a realistic alternative to Obama – an intelligent, mature, and pragmatic Republican – and Sarah is NOT that person. It’s baffling how anyone on either side of the aisle can listen to her speak or look at her career and not see that she is an empty suit that spouts words like “constitution” and “freedom” without any context, pandering her way into the hearts of the ignorant.

*Applause* We could meet half way and have a reasonable and amusing conversation. Cheers!

So you’re using the tired “sexism” argument? Sorry lady, that dog don’t hunt. If Palin was a man I’d feel the same way about her, and so would the vast majority of her critics. The problem is that she’s embarassingly underqualified and more interested in keeping her name in the news than serving anyone but herself.

So you are willing to overlook all of her obvious flaws simply because she is a woman who has been persecuted? Even if this were true (HINT: IT’S NOT), the needs of our country should come before your grudge.

It sounds like you’re voting on this tit for tat game rather than your principles. Do you really let anonymous posters dictate what you believe? Are the conservative nutballs (Alz, Davo, Notsofast, etc) any better?

I also really think you, along with millions of other people, need to try and let go of this absolute certainty that our media is out to destroy conservatism. Remember the fawning coverage of Bush’s first term? Remember the endless parade of trash that got paraded around during the Clinton years? Remember William Ayers? Or Gary Condit? The media heaped it on Obama because his election was a great story. Do you know why people keep reporting on Palin? Because it gets attention. Both from the crazies that obsess over hating her and the crazies that will fight to the death for her. Don’t be a crazy!

Finally, Obama is certainly arrogant. That doesn’t mean Sarah Palin isn’t a narcissist.

it has nothing to do with sexism, although that was rampant in both case.

if Palin was a man, i doubt you would feel the same way, considering Palin actually had more experience than Obama. Even the Obama’s knew Obama was under-qualified.

Obama is an empty suit. Obama is a narcissist. Obama was totally inexperienced. Obama had never accomplished anything prior to winning the election. Obama’s flaws and inexperience was horrendously overlooked, and he was propped up. Obama quit his positions, for higher office. He never accomplished anything that benefited his state, and missed 3/4 of his responsibilities in the Senate. Obama’s biggest accomplishments were writing two books – about himself. Any and all criticism of Obama is called racism. And his shady relationships and dealings were ignored in the media.

Sexism is part of it, but not all. No one questioned Obama’s spending on the trail ($1B), like huge fake columns, and free beer parties, and concert tickets, but Palin was attacked because some personal shopper went out and spent $150K on a wardrobe (because her family didn’t have anything appropriate to wear on the trail). And you accused her of using her children as props, regardless of the fact that EVERY politician poses with their children on the trail. Let’s not even start on the Trig attacks.

Where am I ignoring her flaws? Concerns for the country should come first. Too bad they weren’t in 2007. So, please don’t lecture me about where my concerns are, or concerns for my country.

I have too much time to fret? well, thank you. would you like to be my scheduler, and assign my schedule, and dictate to me when and for how long I can comment here?

Why the hell would any spokesperson for an organization COMPLAIN when someone with a high profile accepted their invitation? because they are blinded by their partisan pettiness, perhaps?

where did she upstage them? where did she make some big announcement about it? i saw one sentence on Greta’s blog about it. The event hasn’t even happened, how the hell can you say she upstaged the event? If ANYTHING she would have brought positive attention to the annual event, and most likely brought out more people who would have donated more money. NOW, it is some s.a. partisan fight, apparently.

They invite famous people, and WANT them to attend. They want publicity, and attention – it HELPS their cause.

Where the hello is she *taking* their mic?

This only became a story because Andrea put this partisan sniper on her show and made it an issue.

And the only people who are stealing the thunder from Rolling Thunder are dolts like Andrea Mitchell who devoted the entire interview to fricking Sarah Palin, and not the event. She didn’t ask him about anything BUT Palin.

The fact that you chose to only respond to one part of my post is unfortunate as it seems you’ve missed my point. Both “sides” are completely full of fakes, freaks, and morons. Yet you are telling me that you were so frustrated by a divisive primary that you’ve entirely switched your belief system. You’ve traded in lies from MSNBC and Daily Kos for lies from Rush Limbaugh and Fox News. That’s really too bad. The left vs. right media circus, along with the tabloids masquerading as “responsible journalism,” should not turn a person from a Hilary Clinton supporter into a Sarah Palin defender. People’s allegiances to people and parties rather than principles is why nothing ever gets done.

By the way, you are being a little myopic about the inclusiveness of conservatives. I was born and raised in western Iowa, the middle of “Real” America. Let’s just say I have a different view.

no, i am not. i am saying that i believed the party stood for something, and had the same ideals/beliefs i do. they do not. i have always considered myself indy because i have differing views on certain issues. i don’t follow either party down the line. social liberal, fiscal conservative. i don’t believe the best way to help people is to create generational welfare dependents. i believe in work for welfare programs. i am hardline with criminals. believe in the death penalty. i support gay marriage/adoption. i now see the *other* side of the abortion issue.

massive slashes to social services – well, we have to do something. jobs would help. there are supposedly 12 million jobs held by *illegals* because no one “wants them”. what’s up with that? no one wants perfectly acceptable jobs? then why are we paying unemployment and welfare? democrats proclaim to be the party of the poor… notice how the poor are always poor. It is really sad that this great American patriot even has to address this issue, Only palin could turn an event like this which is to honor all who have given the ultimate sacrifice for the freedoms that we share. This is one of the reasons many people cannot stand her because it is always all about sarah and forget everyone else just make sure that camera is shining and those dollars are flowing. Pretty much the same as the Tucson tragedy,

What a CROC! Sarah had nothing to do with the Tuscon tragedy! It’s GOOD that she stood-up for herself to the VICIOUS Obama Statist Liberal Media who were trying to blame her!

However, it doesn’t explain how someone can totally change their belief system. why did he HAVE to address the issue? He didn’t. Why did Andrea spend the entire interview asking about Palin? She didn’t have to. NO one had to cover the story at all. Why did Ted have to even open his mouth about Palin attending? He is wrong that pols aren’t invited, that she wasn’t invited, and that high profile people aren’t welcome.

So…whose fault is it that this that poor Ted had to “even address this issue” that he didn’t want Palin there…? That would be Ted, dear.

No one has yet to show me where Palin made some big spotlight stealing announcement about her attendance at the event….

It’s the next day, and this story is still not corrected; not much integrity there Colby. You should issue an apology to your readers for your inability to keep up with facts and issue corrections.

Makes you and Dan look pretty bad; as if you are pushing false information or something (lefty liberal journos are known to be doing that of late).

Issue the correction, take the story down, but for pete’s sake, be honest Colby.

  • TfT

I get a thumbs fown for asking for an update to present the facts! Only in liberal lalal land does seeking the truth equal a thumbs down.

    So funny.

I love all the flack Palin is taking for this.
Even the comments on Yahoo News, which are usually rabidly conservative, are 9 out of 10 against the Wasilla Witch for trying to hog the Rolling Thunder spotlight for facetime.

It’s a 4-way race to see who has the worst campaign kick-off ever

1- Gingrich on Meet The Press

    2 – Bachmann a no-show on Skype.

    3 – Trump the Birther

4 – Palin for trying to grift bikers.

Buckle up, teabloggers, you’re only getting warmed up!

  • TfT

Corrections are turning up all over the place for this falsehood spread by Andrea Mitchell and her hate-Palin cohorts at NBC.

Palin was invited;mediaite should update their story to reflect truth and fact.

NBC, Andrea and MSNBC continue the lies….oh well, it is what they do; hate Palin and lie. what a mission they are on.

No need to retract the story or correct it here, the lefties have already been fed their daily dose of palin hate. Remember, this is a “media” site reporting on the “media” stories of the day, so they have no real responsibility to research or be factual, rather just to toss out red meat that discredits their (mediaite) perceived adversaries (non-liberals) and shines favorable light on their perceived heros (Obama-MSNBC-etc).

Yes, Sarah was invited, and NBC made no attempt to confirm this guy’s story that she wasn’t. Sarah’s attendance brings more attention to Rolling Thunder’s cause than they’ve ever had – and that’s a good thing. But NBC will never let something like facts and journalistic standards get in the way of a story that could possibly paint Sarah in a negative light.

Palin trying to grift bikers? You are truly demented. First of all, she was invited; and secondly, her participation brings more attention to their cause than they’ve ever had. There’s a problem with this story, but to be fair to everyone, it seems to be an honest case of an internal miscommunication at Rolling Thunder.

Christine Colborne handles the media for Rolling Thunder. She explained that Shpak didn’t know that Palin had been indeed invited to ride at the event. The invitation came from a retired board member, Michael DiPaolo, who had connections in Alaska and got Palin to agree to attend.

Did Colby know too? I’m really surprised some mediaite staffer has not come on board, updated this story,. and corrected the record.

I know MSNBC doesn’t care about their reputation – they are known as the television mouthpiece for the DNC and all things democrat propaganda; we all know mediaite leans far left, but for this lie to be perpetuated for this long is pretty shameful on mediaite’s part.

    Issue the correction, please.

Actually, Mediaite could also correct the fact that Ted here isn’t a “spokesperson.” He’s one of the three head honchos. Some retired person was the one doing the inviting and he didn’t tell the people in charge. Colby Hall doesn’t say one way or another. He’s just reporting on what the subject of the interview said.

You people can bash MSNBC all you like. It’s just pretty strange that there are so many people who come to this website to complain everyday about the stories posted.

Is there a vetting process if you want to attend the Rolling Thunder event? Isn’t everyone invited? This sounds like someone is intensely jealous of Palin’s draw power. Will Palin’s appearance get in the way of this guy’s ego? You would think anyone with Palin’s drawing power would be welcomed to help promote the cause.
