Sexual Assault Case Against Ben Roethlisberger Dropped
CNN is reporting that the sexual assault charges filed against Steelers quarterback Ben Roethlisberger have been dropped. District attorney Fred Bright held a press conference earlier where he stated that they did not have enough evidence to charge the football player.
After showing footage from the DA’s press conference, CNN’s Rick Sanchez brings on defense attorney BJ Bernstein to discuss the statement. She points out that the DA not only didn’t have enough evidence to charge Roethlisberger, but not even enough to arrest him. She also questions whether or not the victim’s sorority sisters may have pressured her to go to the police when it wasn’t warranted. What no one is questioning is that the girl was incredibly drunk when the incident occurred (partially from alcohol that Roethlisberger supplied her).
The segment comes off a little harsh on the young woman with both Sanchez and Bernstein finding a lot of fault with her actions. Bernstein ends the piece by putting a lot of the blame for the lack of a case on the girl’s intoxication.
“I want to be really clear. I’m not saying that it’s open-season on women to be sexually assaulted when we’re intoxicated. However, when you choose to get really drunk, when you’re doing shots, when you’re binge drinking like a lot of young people do, the problem is you’re not a great witness of explaining the next day or even an hour later what happened to you.”
This is the second time Roethlisberger has been charged with sexual assault. In that case, the victim never made any criminal charges, however, the civil suit is ongoing.
