Stephen Colbert: Obama Should End The Afghanistan War…By Calling It Something Else

video

Last night President Obama addressed the nation to clarify his latest plan to draw down troops from Afghanistan. And while Stephen Colbert taped his show before Obama’s speech, he still found a way to make some useful suggestions on how the White House could simply improve the nation’s foreign policy, focusing on the semantic opportunities provided by the War Powers Act. How best to end the war? Just change the name to something like a “heavily armed semester abroad.” Done!

The semantic gamesmanship was first raised by Secretary of Defense Robert Gates who recently defined US military operations in Libya as a “limited kinetic operation,” and not a war. So it only stands to reason that if our nation is openly admitting to playing with words (and meaning?) why not go all the way? Watch the clip below, courtesy of Comedy Central:

Name it something else? Isn’t that right out of Obama’s playbook?

There’s that other living in denial, I’m just a comedian, left wing partisan hack, going after the conservatives again.

Please do not give up the wars – please.

We need these wars very very badly.

They are well worth the money and, if I may, the lives and limbs of our country men and women.

Didn’t we learn the lessons of Newspeak from George Orwell? Obama is certainly an expert at applying them. Or are they just Alinsky tactics.

We must stand for something or we will fall for anything. If you voted for Obama in 2008 to prove you aren’t racist, you must vote against him in 2012 to prove you aren’t stupid.

You know there is a book about Newspeak and the Ministry of Truth, for those of you not aware, it is called 1984 by George Orwell.

If you have not noticed it, the communists, erm socialists, erm liberals, erm democrats, erm PROGRESSIVES even use it to describe themselves. It is changing the meaning of words and changing the words used to describe things that is the definition of Newspeak, aka propaganda.

Wow, Colbert is like a broken clock!

Pretty sure you can’t back that up.

I’d say that Jon judges the situations and the issues separately like a lot of people do. There isn’t one conservative view and one liberal view. There are people with different views on different issues. Jon clearly leans left on more issues but that that means he’s calling it as he sees it

at least there are liberals that will criticize this neoliberal, right of center president we have now. obama wants us to “share the sacrifice” in the debt. not only are GOP not complying, obama could be ending these bs wars to save money. instead he is going to cut social security and medicare. what an ass. the whole government doesn’t represent the majority of americans. they represent the wealthy elite
