A self-described “progressive” Democratic candidate for Massachusetts’ now-vacant congressional seat has brought out the big gun for his latest campaign ad: His “Tea Party” father.
In an recent ad, Carl Sciortino, Jr., currently running to replace Sen. Ed Markey‘s vacated House seat, explains his staunchly progressive views despite how they conflict with those of his “Tea Party” father, Carl Sr.
Playfully referring to the fact that he is openly gay, the younger Sciortino jokingly recalls how he once “had to tell” his father a secret: He’s “a Massachusetts liberal.”
“And he’s proud of it,” the elder Sciortino interrupts.
Using the father’s chagrin at his son’s various progressive political beliefs, Sciortino, Jr., firms up his progressive credentials for the audience. He makes special note of a one view “that drives [his father] crazy.”
“He wants to go to Congress to take on the NRA and the Tea Party,” Sciortino, Sr., explains, pointing towards himself.
“I won’t give up on an assault weapons ban,” Sciortino the candidate asserts. He also campaigns on stricter background checks and bans on certain types of high-capacity ammo magazines.
Despite their differences, however, the ad concludes with them both acknowledging their love for one another.
TheBlaze reports that it has confirmed Sciortino, Sr.’s voting record as being Republican in both the 2010 and 2012 elections.
