Democrat Bob Menendez Says ‘President Trump Is Right’ After Being Sentenced to 11 Years for Corruption
Former Sen. Bob Menendez (D-NJ) was sentenced on Wednesday to 11 years in federal prison after he was found guilty on 18 counts of corruption-related offenses.
Menendez accepted gold bars and about $500,000 in cash in exchange for using his position on the Senate Foreign Relations Committee to act on behalf of the Egyptian government. The former senator’s wife, Nadine Menendez, was also implicated, and will also face trial.
Bob Menendez emerged from the federal courthouse in Lower Manhattan after his sentencing on Wednesday, where he struck a defiant tone. The disgraced politician, who reportedly is seeking a pardon from President Donald Trump, cast his prosecution – which occurred under Democratic President Joe Biden – in political terms. He attacked the Department of Justice and the U.S. Attorney who prosecuted him and gave an approving nod to Trump:
This whole process has been nothing but a political witch hunt by the Justice Department, NSD, and prosecutors, who are more interested in political scalps, and preparing to run for public office, like Damian Williams. Welcome to the Southern District of New York, the wild west of political prosecutions.
President Trump is right. This process is political, and it’s corrupted to the core. I hope President Trump cleans up this cesspool and restores the integrity to the system.
Earlier this month, NBC News reported that associates of Menendez had reached out to the White House to see if Biden would be willing to pardon the ex-senator in the waning days of the administration. Those efforts yielded no results.
“Left with the impression that he won’t receive a pardon from Biden, Menendez has now shifted his focus onto President-elect Donald Trump, three people familiar with the discussions said,” NBC News explained.
