Frank Luntz Thinks the GOP is Almost a Shoo-in to Win the House and Senate, With One Caveat: ‘Donald Trump Could Stand in the Way’

Prominent pollster Frank Luntz believes Republicans are pretty close to a lead pipe cinch to win back the House and Senate in 2022. As he sees it, only one thing can stop them.

Donald Trump.

Speaking on ABC’s This Week Sunday, Luntz told a roundtable panel headed by Jon Karl that all signs points to a red wave in November.

“If you look at the polling data, and you do the focus groups, you talk to independents as I have done. I find it difficult to see any other conclusion than Republicans winning control of the House and winning control of the Senate in November,” Luntz said. “Now a lot of stuff can change. And I know that we don’t know what’s going to happen in Ukraine. But Republicans should win both of those based on what’s happening right now and what we know is going to happen in the coming months.”

“I sense a but coming,” Karl sagely predicted.

Indeed, that was Luntz’s very next word.

“A but — which is, only Donald Trump could stand in that way,” Luntz said.

The pollster explained that the public at large has little appetite to re-litigate the 2020 election or the attack on the Capitol. And if those become defining issues in the 2022 election, Republicans will pay the price.

“If he makes this about November of 2020 or January of 2021, it could cost Republicans the Senate,” Luntz said. “If he tries to make this election about himself, the Republicans could lose due to Trump.
