Ben Shapiro Tells Right-Wing Critics of The Odyssey They Are Dead Wrong: ‘The Movie Is a Masterpiece’
Conservative pundit Ben Shapiro praised The Odyssey and said right-wingers who bashed the new Christopher Nolan flick are dead wrong.
“Nolan is unparalleled. He’s the best director working today, without a doubt. He just creates iconic movie after iconic movie,” Shapiro raved during a Friday review posted on YouTube.
He said The Odyssey is the latest great film Nolan has added to his resume, with Shapiro saying “the movie is a masterpiece” and giving it a score of between 8.5 and 9 on a ten point scale.
“The movie looks beautiful. It’s well shot. The images are incredible and iconic,” Shapiro went on. “There are images you can’t get out of your head after having seen the film, particularly the fall of Troy.”
Shapiro added Matt Damon is “great” in the movie and Robert Pattinson plays an “excellent antagonist.”
His glowing review stands out after a number of conservatives and social media users skewered the film before its release.
Matt Walsh, Shapiro’s colleague at The Daily Wire, ripped the film in May for casting Lupita Nyong’o as Helen of Troy — a gripe Elon Musk agreed with.
“Not one person on the planet actually thinks that Lupita Nyong’o is ‘the most beautiful woman in the world.’ But Christopher Nolan knows that he would be called racist if he gave ‘the most beautiful woman’ role to a white woman. Nolan is technically talented but a coward,” Walsh said.
Others like Newsmax anchor Rob Finnerty criticized Nolan casting trans actor Elliot Page as Greek warrior Sinon, and a ton of X users mocked Page last week for a leaked clip showing the actor awkwardly running in the movie.
Shapiro said the complaints about Nyong’o were unwarranted.
“Here’s the thing: actually in the script, Nolan goes out of his way to explain that the war wasn’t really launched over Helen being gorgeous,” Shapiro explained.
As for Page, he said he understood those complaints a bit more. He said Page’s casting was an “absolute puzzler” from Nolan.
“She is about 5’2 and 105 pounds soaking wet and has the voice of a woman,” Shapiro said. “It doesn’t work.”
He finished his review by saying his fellow right-wingers should chill out the next time a blockbuster has a few casting decisions they hate.
“I think there’s a message here for conservatives. I know there are a lot of conservatives who are getting pre-whipped up about the film, because it is stupid to cast Elliot Page as a dude. It’s just stupid,” Shapiro said. “But people on the right were saying ‘Oh, it’s gonna bomb because of that.’ No, the movie’s not going to bomb because of that.”
He continued, “It turns out that when people want to be entertained, they are willing to entertain even bad flaws in the tooth, if the smile is nice. It turns out the people are willing to undergo some bad politics and some decision making if the film is great. But if conservatives want to be effective in the culture, you can’t just label the entire piece of art ‘bad’ because a decision in the art is bad.”
He added the “incredible” movie deserves to make a fortune.
