Nate Silver Posits Americans May Be ‘Moving On’ from Trump

Nate Silver thinks President Donald Trump may have lost his media mojo.

The famous pollster and political pundit on Sunday said he is shocked by the lack of riveting Trump-focused headlines this summer — outside of the Iran war, which he said is still a pretty big deal. Otherwise, Silver said most Trump content is now dull — and suggested it may be a sign the U.S. is ditching the president as the newsmaker-in-chief.

“It’s kind of striking how, apart from Iran, most of the Trump-related stories this summer have been boring and dumb (reflection pool, White House Correspondents’ Dinner) or kind of funny (FIFA),” Silver posted on X. He added,  “maybe we’re moving on from him being the central figure in American politics.”

Silver pointed to some good recent examples of Trump in the news, like him lobbying FIFA boss Gianni Infantino to cancel the controversial red card against USA striker Folarin Balogun in the World Cup. The move ended up not mattering much, with the American squad getting smoked 4-1 by Belgium in the next game. Still, Trump praised Infantino for the “great decision” and boasted the U.S. had officially morphed into a “soccer country.” 

More recently, Trump made fun of CNN anchor Kaitlan Collins at the White House Correspondents’ Dinner on Friday by saying she looked like trans influencer Dylan Mulvaney. The joke enraged many liberals and media figures.

Silver dished his 2026 midterm predictions during a June  interview on the All-In Podcast. He said prediction markets have Democrats at 80-85% odds to win back the House, and 40-45% to take control of the Senate;. Silver said those are “pretty reasonable,” but that it was “a little bit low” on what he projects for the House. Silver said he gives the Dems an 85-90% shot at retaking the House.

“The House is the one where kind of everything points in the same direction. Democrats are facing a very unpopular president and an economy that voters have a lot of anxiety about,” Silver said.

He pointed to several other factors going in the left’s favor, including Trump starting the Iran war, the history of the president’s party not doing well in midterms, and “incumbent backlash” both in the U.S. and abroad recently.

“Look, the redistricting helps the GOP in the end, but you’re fighting against a lot of gravity,” he added.
