Iran called Israel’s devastating overnight airstrikes targeting its military and nuclear infrastructure a “declaration of war.”
Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi described the bombardment as a “declaration of war” in a formal letter to the United Nations, according to France 24, urging the Security Council to “immediately address this issue” as tensions in the region teeter on the edge of open conflict.
The air campaign, which Israel said involved 200 warplanes hitting 100 Iranian targets, marked one of the most audacious Israeli military operations in decades. Among the reported targets was an Iranian nuclear facility, major air defense systems, and senior military leadership.
Iranian officials confirmed the assassination of a top military official.
Tehran’s response was swift on Friday morning, launching over 100 drones towards Israeli territory in what it called the beginning of a “harsh and decisive” retaliation. Air raid sirens blared across Israeli cities as a state of emergency was declared nationwide.
While the U.S. did not participate in Israel’s strikes, Iran accused President Donald Trump of being complicit after officials revealed he was briefed on the operation ahead of time.
“The wicked Trump will get a forceful slap,” a spokesman for Iran’s foreign ministry said.
Iran’s Supreme Leader, Ayatollah Ali Khamenei warned: “Israel has sealed for itself a bitter and painful destiny.”
Iran also announced it will no longer participate in Sunday’s scheduled nuclear talks.
