Fox Military Expert Urges Trump to Change Strategy in Iran: ‘I Don’t Think We Are Close’ to Winning
President Donald Trump should consider a new strategy in Iran, retired Lt. General Keith Kellogg said on Fox News today, because he does not “think we are close” to winning the war.
Kellogg, who served in the 101st Airborne Division during the Vietnam War and retired from the Army in 2003, cited the Gulf War to support this argument.
“I remember the first Gulf War when I was sitting on the berm outside of Iraq, and we watched 30 days of bombing thinking that Iraq was going to fold,” Kellogg said. “They didn’t. They actually fell when we crossed into Iraq and within 48 hours, I was sitting on the banks, within one hundred hours of that attack, they were done.”
Kellogg continued, “They couldn’t believe we had done that to them. I think we need to think like that. I think what we need to do is adjust. And instead of saying they’re going to pay a terrible price by bombing, they don’t really care, because they will absorb this punishment.”
The focus should instead be on “what really affects them.”
Kellogg also said, “I know it’s really hard, it may not be a principle of war but it’s a principle of leadership when you get into a gunfight like this, who’s got the stronger will to finish? The thing I said the other day is pretty important.
“The fact of the matter is if you let a bad team stick around for a long time, like you see in football in the four quarter, they can tend to do something you’re not expecting, so you have to close them out early,” he said. “I think we’ve gone beyond that. I think we should close them out now, figure out a way to finish the fight.”
Despite Trump’s claims the United States is “close” to winning the war, Kellogg said, “I don’t think we’re close, in that regard of finishing the job, if we are just depending on bombing.”
“They’ve got a philosophy, it’s called Mosaic, which is their defense policy. If you look at it and look at their principles of negotiation that their foreign minister wrote, this is in their game plan. They plan to extend this fight.”
