At least one Democrat is backing President Donald Trump’s contentious trade war with Canada.
Rep. Jared Golden (D-ME), whose 2nd Congressional District encompasses the state’s entire northern border with Canada, boldly insisted to the Portland Press Herald that our neighbor to the north would come to regret it.
“If Canada thinks they’re better off without our goods, I wish them good luck,” Golden told the outlet. “I suspect in the long run, it won’t go well for them.”
Golden, 44, was first elected to Congress in 2018 but is not running for re-election, citing threats against his family, according to the Press Herald.
The trade war has consumed headlines since talks between the two nations broke down late Friday — prompting Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney to vow he would match the hefty 50% tariffs threatened by Trump “dollar for dollar.”
Trump slammed Canada earlier this week in a Truth Social post — and has repeatedly tried to troll the nation by claiming he was changing the name of Lake Ontario to Lake America.
“Canada has been Ripping Off the U.S.A. for decades. They have been charging our Farmers 400% Tariffs, and more. They have driven many wonderful U.S. companies out of business. For 10 years they wouldn’t certify Gulfstream Jets, until I got involved. They wanted 100% of the market for Gulfstream’s Canadian competitor,” Trump wrote Tuesday on Truth Social.
“I deal with many countries, and Canada is easily the most difficult and unreasonable. They feel entitled, but they are not a State, and will be entitled no longer!” he added.
The trade war with Canada has baffled critics, and caused some to question if Trump wants to hurt his own country.
“I think President Trump wants to hurt the American people!” Ontario Premier Doug Ford said earlier this week. “It’s going to cost the Americans up to $5,000 more on automobiles. It’s going to cost them a few thousand dollars more when these tariffs are impacted on the U.S.”
