Trump Official Insists ‘There’s No Possible Way’ Trade War with Canada Will Impact US

An official from the Trump administration insisted that a potential trade war with Canada would have no impact whatsoever on the U.S.

President Donald Trump seemingly reignited America’s trade war with Canada after the two countries failed to reach an agreement on a trade deal. Once talks fell through, Trump announced a massive 50% tariff on goods coming from the north. In response, Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney vowed that his country would match Trump’s tariffs “dollar for dollar.”

Should that happen, U.S. trade representative Jamieson Greer isn’t concerned. During an appearance on Squawk Box on Monday morning, he said:

I know that Canadians use histrionics like “trade war” and all these kinds of terms. We don’t do that. I mean, the United States, again, we’re set on our trade policy. The Canadians asked to come and negotiate with us a month ago, so of course if people ask, we do. So we don’t have any issue proceeding with our trade policy as planned, and I think the market understands that. I think the market knows that at the end of the day, this is 5% of imports from Canada. It’s 0.06% of our overall consumption in this economy. So there’s no possible way it can really affect US well-being, right? I mean, we’ve been having great prints on inflation the past couple of months, going down in June and staying flat here, real wages for manufacturing workers going up — so we’re on the right trajectory. The fundamentals are good, and I don’t think this is going to affect anything. That’s why I think the markets are shrugging it off.

Trump has also been engaged in a war of words with Ontario Premier Doug Ford. During an interview on CTV, Ford boldly declared Trump can “kiss my a**” and vowed to “go at him full-steam.” Trump fired back hours later on Truth Social, calling Ford a “flunky” and “overall unimpressive.”
