‘It Doesn’t Work!’ CNN Data Guru Says Americans Aren’t Buying Trump’s Name Changes for Bodies of Water

CNN chief data analyst Harry Enten broke down Americans’ apparent lack of interest in President Donald Trump’s efforts to rename bodies of water.

The previous day, Trump signed an executive order renaming Lake Ontario to Lake America. It came in the wake of the president’s reignited trade war against Canada, with both sides exchanging tariff threats in recent days.

As one might expect, the reactions to the name change fell along party lines, with Democrats criticizing it and Republicans praising it.

According to Enten, however, Americans aren’t buying the change.

Citing Google search data, Enten revealed that searches for “Lake Ontario” outnumbered searches for “Lake America” in all 50 states.

“Americans are, simply put, not convinced,” Enten said. “You could see it right here. I mean, just look to Google. I think this gives the game away. Are Americans actually calling Lake Ontario Lake America? No! Searched more on Google in the last day: in all 50 states, all of them, Lake Ontario– more people search for Lake Ontario than Lake America, where it was 0-0-0-0 states in which more people searched for Lake America than Lake Ontario.”

That Google trend, Enten noted, was identical to the one seen with Trump’s “Gulf of America” debacle. Before his second term even began, Trump vowed to rename the Gulf of Mexico.

“Remember he wanted to make the Gulf of Mexico, ‘Gulf of America?'” Enten continued. “Searched more on Google in the last year: ‘Gulf of Mexico,’ all 50 states — all 50 states. So it’s not just after one day. It is after a year in which more Americans have been searching the Gulf of Mexico than the Gulf of America. Again, [John Berman], it’s the 0-0-0. And we actually have polling on that because the net approval rating for that change was 35 points underwater, deep into the Gulf of Mexico. This name changing stuff, simply put, it doesn’t work with the American people.”
