Jake Tapper Hammers Trump After Attack on Maggie Haberman: ‘Disgusting and Beneath the Office’

CNN’s Jake Tapper fired back at President Donald Trump over a lengthy tirade directed at CNN commentator and New York Times reporter Maggie Haberman.

On Thursday, Haberman and three Times colleagues reported that Trump will skip a ceremony at Ground Zero on the 25th anniversary of the Sept. 11 attacks. The president reportedly wanted to deliver a speech at the commemoration hosted by the September 11 Memorial and Museum, which has prohibited politicians from giving speeches at the annual event since 2012. Additionally, they reported that Trump’s travel plans also factored into the decision. The president plans to head to Ireland for the Irish Open, which begins on Sept. 10 and ends on Sept. 13. Trump will attend a Sept. 11 ceremony at the Pentagon, where one of the four hijacked planes crashed.

Trump fumed at Haberman in a Truth Social post on Friday, referring to the reporter as “Maggot” and calling her “unattractive.”

“Maggot Hagerman, the Fake Reporter from The Failing New York Times, an unattractive person both inside and out, and who knows less about me than most reporters on the beat (She’s a SCAMMER!), made up a story that on September 11th, I’m not going to the World Trade Center, in New York City, because they won’t let me make a speech, and I’m going to the Pentagon in D.C., because I’m a featured speaker,” Trump wrote in part.

Hours later, an irate Tapper responded on X, calling Trump’s words “disgusting and beneath the office”:

I’m not going to repost the filth the president wrote about Maggie Haberman, but suffice it to say she’s a great person, beautiful inside and out, an incredible mom and wife and colleague, and an amazing journalist. The president’s comments are disgusting and beneath the office.

In a subsequent post, Tapper wrote, “We should never get used to this deterioration in our expectations for how a president should behave. Never.”
