Trump Attacks Tim Walz in Air Force One Rant When Asked About MN Assassinations
President Donald Trump attacked Gov. Tim Walz (D-MN) when CNN White House correspondent Kaitlan Collins asked if he’d spoken to the governor since the stunning shootings of lawmakers in Minnesota.
Minnesota Democrats State Sen. John Hoffman and Minnesota State Rep. Melissa Hortman were targeted in shootings Saturday that wounded Hoffman and his wife and killed Rep. Hortman and her husband.
After a two-day manhunt, 57-year-old Vance Boelter was taken into custody Sunday night as he hid in the woods.
President Trump emerged from the press cabin on the trip home from Canada Monday afternoon after G7 summit to take questions from reporters for about 12 minutes, during which Collins asked about Walz and the shootings.
Trump went on a brief but derisive tirade about Walz, mocking the idea that he would call the highest official in a state where a pair of chilling political assassinations had occurred days earlier and calling that official a series of denigrating names:
KAITLAN COLLINS: In Minnesota, there were a lot of horrific details that came out today about the suspect who’s been charged there.
Have you called the governor yet or been able to speak to any of them?
PRESIDENT DONALD TRUMP: I don’t really call him.
He appointed this guy to a position. I think the governor of Minnesota is so whacked out!
I’m not calling him. Why would I call him? I could call him and say, “Hi, how are you doing?”
The guy doesn’t have a clue. He’s a mess. So, you know, I could be nice to call him, but why waste time?
Trump’s mention of an “appointment” was in reference to the Minnesota Governor’s Workforce Development Board, to which Boelter was appointed in 2016 by Walz’s predecessor Gov. Mark Dayton (D-MN) — an appointment that Walz then renewed.
