Trump Grilled on Negotiations With Iran: ‘What’s the Status of Talks? Who Is Talking?’
Reporters pressed President Donald Trump on the status of the Iran war and the ongoing negotiations with the Islamic State during Friday’s cabinet meeting.
“How do you go about…getting diplomacy back on track?” one reporter asked.
“Well, I think we just want to win. You know, we just want to win. We’re doing very well. We’re trying to be nice, as nice as you can be in a situation like that,” Trump said, continuing:
But, you know, they’re being decimated. They have no Navy, they have no Air Force, they have no antiaircraft. Doesn’t mean that they don’t have any capability, they have some, but very little. We just want to win. We don’t want to have them, it’s very simple, they cannot have a nuclear weapon. Iran will not have a nuclear weapon, and they can’t have a nuclear weapon. If they did, the Middle East would have been wiped out by now. If I did not stop the JCPOA, the Obama deal, if I didn’t terminate that, they would have had a nuclear weapon. I believe Israel would no longer be with us, and big parts of the Middle East. And perhaps other countries in different continents, frankly, cause these people are crazy. So, they can’t have a nuclear weapon, and they won’t.
“We’ll be hitting them very hard,” Trump continued. “And at some point, they’ll say, ‘We just can’t take it anymore.'”
Another reporter asked, “What is status of talks? Who from the administration is talking to the Iranians?”
“Steve [Witkoff] is talking, Jared [Kushner], we have very good people. JD’s [Vance] involved, very strongly involved. We have great people talking. Marco’s involved. Very good people. We have the best people.
“‘Cause they say talks aren’t happening,” the reporter pressed.
“But, they’ll make a deal, as example, talk about nuclear, and we’ll be in there talking about nuclear for seven hours. I say ‘Why’s it, why do you need seven, you can take 10 minutes, you have five minutes, you should solve it.’ But seven hours, and then they’ll go out, and I’ll say, ‘They discussed nuclear,’ and they’ll go out and they’ll say, ‘We never discussed nuclear.’ I’ll say, ‘Why did they say that?’ All they do is make me angry, you know? They just make me angry.”
“Do you believe that you can reach a deal with Iran given that you talked about how disloyal they are?” the reporter asked.
“I’m losing faith in them. Because they do lie. And they do misrepresent.”
Another reporter asked, “How many more strikes will it take” for U.S. Central Command to degrade Iran in the Strait of Hormuz.
“Well you never know. Look, I mean, most people would have given up by now, you know?” Trump answered. “They got no navy, they got no air force. Most people would have given up, they haven’t. So, I give them credit. You know, they’re known for being tough. They’re tough.”
