WATCH: Weather Channel Segment Erupts as Reporter Almost Gets Struck in the Head By Hurricane Laura Debris

Weather Channel reporter Stephanie Abrams had a close call live on the air Thursday morning when she was almost hit by debris as she reported on Hurricane Laura, as staff could be heard freaking out off-camera.

The near-accident was preceded by some rather on-the-nose foreshadowing.

Shortly after 2 a.m., Abrams and fellow reporter Jim Cantore were delivering dueling live reports from Lake Charles, Louisiana when Abrams decided to move from safety to get a better shot.

She first noted that she was trying to stand where she could be protected, saying that “at the weather channel, it is safety first. It’s always been like that. Standing out there right now, it’s just not safe.”

But then she told her videographer that “I’m sorry, I know I’m not in a light. I can step down a couple of steps, I’m still fine right here. I’m good, are you good?”

“We want to make good TV for you guys and we also want to be safe. And so we want to bring you the shot, but we want to do it safely,” Abrams said, and addressed Cantore remotely. “Jim, the fact that there’s no protection down there, I’m just going to hang on a sec so you can still get the experience and still see it but we’re going to do it safely.”

“Hey Steph, give me one second here, I’m just going to go put a helmet on, I’m around a lot of trees and I really don’t feel like getting whaled on in the head so I’m just going to put a helmet on out here since I’m standing out here,” Cantore said.

Seconds later, what appeared to be a large amount of glass fell almost directly on Abrams, sending her scurrying and prompting off-camera exclamations from the studio.

“We are fine, everyone, we’re fine, we are totally fine. Everything’s okay. Okay?” Abrams said, and went on to add “So that’s why we didn’t want to stand far down on the stairs, okay?”
