CNN’s Roy Wood Jr. on Trump-Musk Relationship: ‘You Ever Had Homeboy Who Had a Girlfriend Nobody Liked?’
CNN’s Roy Wood Jr. offered a colorful assessment of President Donald Trump’s relationship with Elon Musk.
Musk spent about a quarter of a billion dollars to return Trump to the White House. The Tesla CEO’s gamble was rewarded when Trump chose him to lead the “Department of Government Efficiency,” which has been meddling in various departments, firing employees, and freezing spending in contravention of Congress. As a result, the Trump administration has been sued on various fronts and has been dealt several losses in court.
The episodes have underscored the vast power Musk – an unelected official – has in the federal government and how far the Trump administration is willing to exercise its power, both within and outside the limits the Constitution imposes on the executive branch.
Wood joined Thursday’s CNN NewsNight, where the panel discussed comments Musk made criticizing the judges who ruled against the administration. The billionaire suggested their rulings are somehow illegal and said the judges should be impeached.
“First of all, judges being able to stop things that are against the law is actually how a democracy is supposed to work,” host Abby Phillip said.
“Only since only since 1803,” cracked former federal prosecutor Jeffrey Toobin. “That’s been the rule. In Marbury vs. Madison in 1803, the Supreme Court decided that it’s actually judges who make the final decision in our country about whether something is constitutional or not. So, that’s the rule we are talking about here that Elon Musk apparently either doesn’t know about or doesn’t like.”
Phillip added that she’d “like to offer a high school U.S. history class” to Musk. “This is basic stuff about how our system works.”
Wood, a former Daily Show veteran who hosts Have I Got News For You on CNN, offered his thoughts.
“I look at this Trump-Elon relationship,” he began. “You ever had a homeboy who had a girlfriend nobody liked? And he has to act like… ‘Oh, we’re fine. We’re happy.’ Like, it is going to take a consecutive series of brave people to keep this administration from going off the rails.”
