David Zurawik: ‘I Really Think We’re Overstating Bannon’s Importance’

On CNN’s Reliable Sources this morning, Brian Stelter asked if the media is making “too much of Breitbart’s power” and, by extension, Steve Bannon‘s.

Zurawik said the media sometimes creates “scary media and political figures on the right” like Karl Rove, arguing that “I really think we’re overstating Bannon’s importance.”

He’s not completely dismissing Bannon out of hand, especially when you consider the influence Breitbart wields when it goes after people like Paul Ryan.

“In one sense, he’s important because of what he says,” Zurawik added, “but I think he is not that important in terms of their widespread influence. We overestimate, I think, his influence to some extent.”

Kurt Bardella, who used to work at Breitbart News, pointed out that there is one incredibly important factor at play when considering Breitbart’s significance: how much attention the President pays to it.
