Evan McMullin Tells Jim Acosta He And His Wife Were Threatened at Gunpoint By Man With ‘Proclivity for Political Violence’ After Campaign Event
Utah independent Senate candidate and former presidential candidate Evan McMullin spoke to CNN’s Jim Acosta on Saturday about his personal experience with political violence earlier this year.
After speaking with McMullin, a former CIA agent, on the news of the day regarding Donald Trump and classified documents, Acosta shifted gears to ask about the incident that took place in April.
The Salt Lake Tribune reported the situation this weekend after obtaining court documents detailing the events that allegedly took place as McMullin and his wife were driving home from a campaign event on April 10 in Utah.
The couple were “followed, chased and threatened at gunpoint” by a 44-year-old man in a pick-up truck, the Tribune explains, quoting from those documents. The suspect is now facing misdemeanor charges.
Acosta asked McMullin about the “pretty alarming situation” on Saturday, noting that the suspect is disputing the charges and McMullin’s allegations.
McMullin said the man put his family at risk and indicated he has a history that may come into play.
“This is an individual who appears to have some, you know, some sort of extreme proclivity to to violence,” he said. “Particularly he has a proclivity for political violence, or for talking about political violence based on what appear to be his social media posts. And of course, as I’m running for office and testifying in open court against him, you know, that’s of concern.”
Jim Acosta: here’s something very personal that you went through. And we’re reporting this first on CNN. You are accusing a driver of pointing a gun at you and your wife during an incident back in April. The case appears to be heading toward a trial. It appears to be a pretty alarming situation that you experienced. Can you tell us more about it?
Evan McMullin: Well, yes. There’s an individual that is being charged with with threatening my my wife and I with a weapon and aggressively pursuing us with with his car. This is an incident that happened back in April. It is going to trial at the moment. And, you know, look, it’s it’s it’s something that I, you know, experienced serving overseas in the Middle East and other places like that and incidents like these. But this individual put the life of my wife at risk, and I’m going to do everything I can to protect her and my family and to hold this individual accountable. And and that’s why he’s been charged.
Acosta: And we should note, the attorney for the other motorist, as he disputes your version of events, he has pleaded not guilty in this case. But what do you hope to see happen as a result of this case?
McMullin: Well, he’s being charged because he he, you know, threatened us with his weapon. And I correctly identified and described that weapon. And his own wife informed police officers that he did indeed have that weapon. So that’s why he’s being charged. And if he can claim that he didn’t do it. But but I think, you know, the facts are you know, the facts do not support his claims.
But regardless, you know, this is, you know, a case of someone who should who did something to to put my family at risk. And and I’m going to do everything I can do to cooperate with law enforcement, to hold him accountable. And there’s a process for that. And, you know, he all this is an individual who appears to have some, you know, some sort of extreme proclivity to to violence. And that is of great concern to us. Particularly he has a proclivity for political violence or for talking about political violence based on what appear to be his social media posts. And of course, as I’m running for office and testifying in open court against him, you know, that’s of concern. But we’re going to continue to to. We’re going to continue onward. And as I said, I’m going to do what I need to do to protect my family.
Acosta: All right, Evan McMullin, I know it was not easy for you to talk about this. That happened many months ago. And I know you’re reluctant to talk about it because of the concerns for your family and their safety. But. Evan, thank you very much for your time. We appreciate it.
