Ex-Trump Press Secretary Hogan Gidley Says Elon Musk’s New Party Is Great ‘in Theory,’ But Warns Billionaire Has ‘No Natural Base’
Former Trump White House deputy press secretary Hogan Gidley argued on Monday that while Elon Musk’s launch of a third political party to challenge the Republicans was great “in theory,” Musk had no significant political base to push him to victory.
“These attempts are always ones that end up kind of being futile to some degree because the two-party system, while a lot of people lament it, it’s disconcerting when you try to start a new party and you don’t have a base from which to draw,” Gidley said on Newsmax’s American Agenda:
Now, a Mark Cuban wants to get involved? Fine, but are people in this country clamoring for a Mark Cuban to do something in politics? He dabbled in it already and was quite swiftly and correctly rebuked for his idiocy. So again, I don’t know where this goes. It’ll come to fruition. Whether it has any longevity or not, you know, remains to be seen. Musk has enough money to keep it going for a long time and he may have a good candidate here or there, but for the most part, you know– remember Jesse Ventura when he won governor of Minnesota? He had no natural base from the Republicans or the Democrats in his legislature, so nobody supported him. So it’s a weird place to be in.
Gidley concluded, “In theory, it’s great, and do we need more voices and different ideologies and ideas? Of course. Is this the right way to go? Only time will tell.”
Musk announced his intention to launch “the America Party” last week following his public feud with former ally President Donald Trump.
“By a factor of 2 to 1, you want a new political party and you shall have it!” wrote Musk in a social media post after conducting a poll. “When it comes to bankrupting our country with waste & graft, we live in a one-party system, not a democracy. Today, the America Party is formed to give you back your freedom.”
President Trump mocked Musk’s announcement, describing his former special government employee and DOGE head as “a TRAIN WRECK” who “wants to start a Third Political Party, despite the fact that they have never succeeded in the United States.”
“The one thing Third Parties are good for is the creation of Complete and Total DISRUPTION & CHAOS, and we have enough of that with the Radical Left Democrats, who have lost their confidence and their minds!” wrote Trump.
Musk’s announcement also received criticism from CNN senior political commentator Scott Jennings, who warned that a new party “would divide conservatives and Republicans against each other,” and CNN senior data analyst Harry Enten, who likened the idea to “selling sand in the desert.”
