‘It Was the Strangest Thing Ever’: Hakeem Jeffries Says ‘Trump 2028’ Hats ‘Randomly Appeared’ During Trump Meeting

House Minority Leader Hakeem Jeffries (D-NY) told CNN on Tuesday that a pair of “Trump 2028” hats “randomly appeared in the middle” of his meeting with President Donald Trump.

After it was reported that Jeffries and Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer (D-NY) had rejected a pair of “Trump 2028” hats offered to them during their Oval Office meeting with the president, Jeffries gave a different account of what happened to CNN host Abby Phillip.

“When he tried to hand you that ‘Trump 2028’ hat, what was your reaction?” asked Phillip during a CNN NewsNight interview with Jeffries.

The House minority leader responded, “Well, actually, he did not try to hand Leader Schumer and I the Trump 2028 hat. They just randomly appeared in the middle of the meeting on the desk. It was the strangest thing ever.”

“I just looked at the hat, looked at JD Vance, who was seated to my left, and said, ‘Don’t you got a problem with this?’ and he said, ‘No comment,'” continued Jeffries. “And that was the end of it.”

Punchbowl News senior congressional reporter Andrew Desiderio had reported earlier on Tuesday that Trump “tried to give” Jeffries and Schumer the hats, which they “did not take.”

President Trump mocked Jeffries and Schumer after the meeting by posting photos of the two men sitting next to the “Trump 2028” hats.

The president also posted a fake video of Jeffries as a Mexican wearing a sombrero – a clear taunt after Jeffries accused Trump of being “racist” for posting a similar sombrero video this week.
