James Carville Slams Democrats on MS NOW: ‘We’re Not Meeting the Moment’
Democratic strategist James Carville delivered a blistering takedown of his own party on Friday, warning Democrats are “not meeting the moment” in an extraordinary political and economic crisis just 95 days before the midterm elections.
Appearing on MS NOW’s The Beat, speaking with host Ari Melber, the veteran strategist argued Democrats have become distracted by narrower policy fights while the country faces deeper structural challenges, accusing party leaders of failing to grasp the scale of the moment.
“Let’s take the plane another 10,000 feet. This is the truth: we have lost a war. We lost a war to a third world power. Get over it!” Carville said of the ongoing Iran conflict, before turning to the nation’s economic outlook.
“Right now our debt to GDP ratio, I think, is higher than it was in 1946, after we actually won a war,” he said.
Carville also pointed to a Wall Street Journal article about President Donald Trump’s fundraiser Meredith O’Rourke, reporting on her push to collect on multi-million dollar promises from megadonors.
“She calls donors that have met with the president and says ‘the president wants this money, now, pay up!’ And it goes between $5-15 million,” Carville said, calling it “the staggering level of debt, defeat and corruption that the United States of America, at the end of July in 2026, is facing.”
Despite all this, he added: “And I have got to tell you I am not impressed by the response of a lot of people in the Democratic Party.”
Carville contrasted what he sees as the country’s most pressing issues with campaign debates unfolding in key battleground states: “We’re having a race in Michigan and we’re talking about Palestinian self-determination. We’re having a race in Wisconsin, we’re talking about whether we should tax Harley-Davidson 17%.”
“We’re not meeting the moment!” he raged.
He also urged Democrats considering a presidential bid to enter the race, arguing that if the party needs stronger leadership to craft a sharper message, then that someone should step into the breach.
“My hope and my prayers, any Democrat out there thinking run for president, you have something to offer? For God’s sake run, run for office because we’re not getting – we got nothing but problems,” Carville said, adding that Democrats were instead “getting stupid talking points about a war that’s gone on for 5000 years and not likely to get solved between now and election day.”
“I think the state of the country is even more perilous than you even let it on to be,” he concluded.
