‘Total Empty Vessel’: MS NOW Analyst Says Darline Graham’s Win Is ‘Exactly’ What Trump Is Looking For

After news broke that Sen. Darline Graham (R-SC) won her state’s special Senate Republican primary Tuesday, MS NOW political analyst Tim Miller remarked that she’s a “total empty vessel,” noting that her victory is “exactly” what President Donald Trump is looking for.

Graham was appointed to her late brother Sen. Lindsey Graham’s (R-SC) seat at Trump’s urging in July. In Tuesday’s primary runoff, she defeated Rep. Ralph Norman (R-SC), winning 52.6% of the vote to Norman’s 47.4%. According to the Associated Press, 95% of the votes are in. Graham will now face Democratic nominee Dr. Annie Andrews in the state’s general election.

As MS NOW’s Mychael Schnell noted on Tuesday’s edition of The Briefing with Jen Psaki, the president “could not have had more skin in this race,” citing his Friday appearance at Graham’s Myrtle Beach rally and the nearly $800,000 investment by MAGA Inc., a super PAC run by his advisers, into her campaign.

Miller, also the host of a podcast for The Bulwark, went on to offer his take on the win, adding:

I think that there are a couple of things at play here. Trump is petty, and Ralph Norman, despite being a big supporter of the insurrection and one of the organizers of the insurrection rally, actually, then ended up endorsing Nikki Haley, his home state former governor [for president in 2024], and I think that this is just as simple as that, like it’s payback for Trump.

But Darline Graham, on top of that, offers Trump really kind of his model senator, right? Somebody who just is a total empty vessel. They’ll just do whatever he wants. She doesn’t know anything about the issues. She doesn’t have any thoughts on her own. Why would she possibly buck Donald Trump on anything? She doesn’t know enough to disagree with him about anything.

So, like, I think that if you’re Donald Trump, in Darline Graham, you get exactly what you’re looking for, you know, which is just basically like a Russian Duma-style support from a Republican in the Senate for whatever you want to do, whether it’s illegal or not or crazy or not, and I think that he’s excited about that possibility.

Notably, Trump said of Graham last week, “She’s going to do what the military wants, and really what the president wants.”

The president’s comments came as he was questioned over her debate flub, during which she failed to answer a question about Taiwan and the South China Sea, responding instead, “I’m just gonna be honest here. I’m not, on national security – I’m not that informed on national security, so – but I do support the military.”
