‘Vladimir Putin’s Work Was Being Done for Him’: Susan Glasser Stunned by Trump ‘Amplifying Russian Lies’ in Explosive Exchange With Zelensky

The New Yorker‘s Susan Glasser suggested that President Donald Trump’s explosive exchange with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky on Friday was hugely beneficial for Russia.

Zelensky was in the White House on Friday to further discuss the terms of the U.S.’s support of Ukraine and an eventual end to its war with neighboring Russia. While the media was present in the Oval Office, the two presidents — as well as Vice President JD Vance — began to butt heads before the conversation devolved into a shouting match.

It began when Zelensky noted that Russian President Vladimir Putin violated a previous agreement that Vance called it “disrespectful” for Zelensky to “litigate this in front of the American media.” Trump added that Zelensky was “gambling with World War III” and that the Ukrainian president didn’t “have the cards right now.”

The back-and-forth continued in front of the media for more than ten minutes before Trump quipped the exchange was “going to be great television.”

Reacting on Inside Politics, Glasser explained her belief that Russia came out a big winner of the argument, saying:

It had the feelings, at times,  of an ambush, where you had the Vice President of the United States and the President of the United States both going after President Zelensky, at points, in that confrontation. In many ways, it seemed as though, you know, Vladimir Putin’s work was being done for him. And I just think the big picture here is to understand the shock and horror of Ukraine, to see the country that was its biggest ally and supporter — in the space of weeks — essentially change the foreign policy of the United States and of the West.

She continued:

And you had Trump and Vance amplifying Russian lies about the invasion. You had Donald Trump in that confrontation saying that, you know, he trusts Vladimir Putin. You had him saying lies about the Russian intervention in our elections back in 2016. This is the level of grievance going forward; but what’s happened in the last week, it’s hard for us to process, I think. The United States — Donald Trump — has switched sides in the war; and I think that is the backdrop for this confrontation that we just saw.
