Late Friday, President Donald Trump signed an executive memo Department of Defense and the Department of Homeland Security to implement a transgender military ban.
The ban is set to take effect next March, after a six-month period in which the Department of Defense and the Department of Homeland Security are slated to develop and carry out plans for the move.
Twitter came down harshly against the ban. Here’s a sampling of the reaction from pols, pundits and others:
Bigot. https://t.co/IWoMsv59zW

I am deeply ashamed of America and the 63 million people who voted for Donald Trump. He is a full fledged bigot. It's just disgusting.

An absolutely despicable discriminatory policy. Everyone who voted for this man should be ashamed. https://t.co/YedIGLmuqG

The transgender military ban is pure, concentrated discrimination. There is no good justification for it. It's cruelty for cruelty's sake.

Preventing #transgender troops from serving is wrong and it's un-American.

Another executive action from @realDonaldTrump that violates our values. We stand with transgender Americans who want to defend our nation.

Trump's transgender ban is a vicious hate crime on a federal scale. Most Americans are against it.

Trump & Pence are turning their hate & bigotry into policy. This attack on trans troops makes our country less safe. https://t.co/nmQ1WaBo6s

Trump's "presidency" should be designated a hate group

My thoughts go out to all the trans people currently serving in the military. I can't even imagine what kind of stress this is causing.

Trans folks are my family, my co-workers, my community.
This military ban is disgusting & wrong. DISGUSTING & WRONG

Sad that a trans person can't be a soldier, but a pile of garbage can be the president.

15,000 brave trans service members continued to defend us between Trump's tweets and this ban going into effect. They deserve better. https://t.co/FvwDX3F9yL

Trump's move to ban transgender troops is on the wrong side of national security & the wrong side of history. #ProtectTransTroops https://t.co/Rn4Ln3hm1L
