Bill O’Reilly Gets Pressed on Ailes: ‘For Once in My Life, I’m Going to Keep My Big Mouth Shut’

On Tuesday morning, Fox News stalwart Bill O’Reilly made a trip to 30 Rock for a television interview on the TODAY show and was largely — and predictably — peppered with questions about the wake of the Roger Ailes exit.

Although many on the network had been not only supportive of their old boss Ailes following a series of sexual harassment allegations but also critical of the accusers, some have had come-to-Jesus moments; Greta Van Susteren, for example, said months ago, “I’ve been in [Ailes’] office a million times… If this were going on, I would have heard about it,” before backtracking her support. Longtime Fox host Geraldo Rivera admitted that he was “filled with regret” for instinctively defending his former boss.

Savannah Guthrie on Tuesday pressed O’Reilly on similar support that he gave to Ailes following the lawsuit initially filed by Gretchen Carlson in July.

“You’ve been on record saying you support [Ailes] 100%,” said Guthrie. “Have you learned anything in these last few months that made you change your mind about that?”

O’Reilly said, “I don’t know anything about the case,” noting that his original support for Ailes was based entirely on workplace dynamics. “Nothing. So, he was a great boss. Best boss I ever had… that’s all I’ve said. And I’m not going to say anything else because I work for this company. And I don’t really have any insight into anything. So for once in my life, I’m going to keep my big mouth shut.”

O’Reilly then balked at the suggestion that there has been any change either to programming or the general Fox news culture since Ailes was forced out. “Does it feel different when you walk in the building?” asked Willie Geist.

“I don’t walk in the building a lot,” noted the Fox host and author. “I do a lot of my work in a separate place. It’s a sad situation for everyone involved and that’s all I’m gonna say.”
