Cancer Research Foundation Rejects Reddit Donations Made over Nude Photos

One of the strangest things to emerge from the celebrity nude photo hacking was a Reddit drive to raise money for cancer research “in honor of Jennifer Lawrence.” Yes, that actually happened.

Let’s back up a bit. There’s a nickname some online users have used to brand the nude photo hacking: the Fappening. (In case you don’t get it, “fap” is synonymous with “masturbate.”) And there is a subreddit under that name, solely dedicated to sharing and discussing the nude photos.

And for some reason, the subreddit also decided to donate a ton of money for cancer research, with Jennifer Lawrence’s photos serving as some kind of weird inspiration. Now, it was actually pretty effective, raising thousands and thousands of dollars for the Prostate Cancer Foundation.

But when the PCF realized what was spurring Redditors to donate, they immediately took action and issued this statement:

A post appeared on Reddit late Monday afternoon, September 1, 2014. A Reddit user directed other Reddit users to make a donation to the Prostate Cancer Foundation without the Foundation’s knowledge. We would never condone raising funds for cancer research in this manner. Out of respect for everyone involved and in keeping with our own standards, we are returning all donations that resulted from this post.

A lot of Redditors were really pissed off at the PCF’s decision and complained on the Fappening subreddit:
