Heart-Pounding Videos Show the Moment Deadly Mudslide Tore Through Tibet, Leaving Hundreds Missing

Devastating videos captured the moment a deadly wall of mud and floodwaters tore through Tibet, near the Nepal border on Wednesday, as hundreds of people, including nearly 300 foreign tourists, were reported missing following the disaster.

The flash flood struck the Bhote Koshi river region along the border, unleashing torrents of muddy water powerful enough to destroy buildings and sweep away infrastructure.

At least 18 people have been confirmed dead in Nepal, while Chinese state media reported “major casualties” across the border in Tibet, which is controlled by China. The full scale of the disaster remained unclear as rescue and recovery efforts continue.

Dramatic footage from the region showed the force of the flooding as it ripped through communities. Verified video from Nepal captured a bridge being swept away, while other footage showed multi-story buildings collapsing under the weight of the rushing water.

Images from Nepal’s Nuwakot district published by the BBC showed homes partially submerged after thick, muddy floodwater.

The Nepal Tourism Board said in an update that 384 travelers had been identified as missing, including 291 foreign nationals and 93 Nepali nationals.

The tourism board said officials were “working to verify” the “whereabouts and safety status” of people who had been traveling through the affected region.

Nepal’s foreign minister said preliminary information suggested an earthquake may have caused an avalanche, which subsequently triggered the flash floods.

The number of casualties could rise as officials attempt to reach communities cut off by the destruction and determine the fate of hundreds still listed as missing.
